A night after curtains came down on the IPL with Sunrisers Hyderabad emerging victorious, the stars shone bright at the CEAT Cricket Awards at a city hotel on Monday.

Players who are usually displaying their cricketing skills in their team jerseys were at their dapper best in the ceremony that had the Who's Who of Indian cricket. If Ajinkya Rahane walked in with stylish suit, Indian off-spinner R Ashwin wore bandhgala. Rohit Sharma wore a casual black shirt with his wife by his side.

Former India captain and Lifetime Achievement Award winner Dilip Vengsarkar and Sunil Gavaskar looked dashing in their Modi jackets.

However, the man who was conspicuous by his absence was the superstar Virat Kohli. The Royal Challengers Bangalore skipper who has been in terrific form was awarded the T20 Player of the Year.

Sharma won the Indian Cricketer of the Year while Ashwin walked away with International Bowler of the Year.

"The year 2015-16 has been a good year for us. As you saw we won a Test series in Sri Lanka after a long gap and we won the Test series at home against South Africa. We did well in the World T20 although we lost to the West Indies (in the semis). They deserved to be champions as they played well throughout the tournament," an elated Sharma said. "A lot of Test cricket is coming up and preparation for one format of the game will help us."

Meanwhile, the all-smiling Ashwin said IPL has given him the platform but it the longer format that has helped him. "IPL gave me the opportunity to show my skills. I picked up off spin when I was 17 which was quite late, I feel, but it was first class cricket that enabled me to keep getting better," he said.

"I strive for excellence and one day I want to bowl four maiden overs in a T20 game," he added.

The Tamil Nadu off-spinner said he was striving hard to become a better batsman. "The opportunity doesn't come much, but I have been working very hard on it," he added,

India Test vice-captain Rahane was given Special Award for becoming the fifth batsman to score a century in each innings of a Test, the feat coming against South Africa on a turner at the Ferozeshah Kotla in New Delhi late last year.

Joe Root walked away with the International Cricketer of the Year and International Batsman of the year. India U-19 youngsters Rishabh Pant, Ishan Kishan and the star batsman Sarfaraz Khan were rewarded with the Young Players award.
