Former World number one Maria Sharapova received a flurry of reactions after she was provisionally suspended for failing a drug test at the Australian Open.

Admitting that she was angry with Sharapova, former tennis star Jennifer Capriati took to Twitter to express her disappointment with the news. "I am extremely angry and disappointed. I had to lose my career and never opted to cheat no matter what. I had to throw in the towel and suffer," she tweeted.

The 18-time Grand Slam winner Martina Navratilova believes that Sharapova had committed an honest mistake and hopes to have this matter cleared soon, the Guardian reported. Meanwhile, Andy Murray's former coach Brad Gilbert said that he was shocked to hear that the Russian did not check the new list from WADA. "Still stunned that nobody on Shazza team checked new list from wada, players are responsible but this is big time oversight on team as well," Gilbert tweeted.

Former British No. 1 Andrew Castle also expressed his views on the shocking news and said, "Hold on. This is weird. Wada issue their list of banned substances and you don't look? Nor do management?"

Earlier, Sharapova admitted that she made a 'huge mistake', saying that she received a list of prohibited items from WADA for 2016, but added she did not look at the list. Sharapova was charged in accordance with Article 8.1.1 of the TADP with an anti-doping rule violation and was provisionally suspended from March 12. As a result, the 400,000 dollars that Sharapova had won at the Australian Open was immediately forfeited, with a two-year and potentially career-ending ban could be possible.

Sharapova further insisted that she does not want to end her career like this and hopes to get another chance to play the game. Following the suspension, Sports brand Nike had also severed its ties with the tennis player.
The tennis star had provided the anti-doping sample on January 26, the day she lost to Serena Williams in the Australian Open quarter finals.
