Indian men's hockey chief coach Roelant Oltmans is likely to get the physical analysis of each individual player by October to get a fair idea going into the Rio Olympic mode. The idea is to know "how much a particular player could last under a particular intensity during a high pressure game at the international level".

After taking over the reins from the sacked Paul Van Ass in July this year, Oltmans has demanded additional personnel to his support staff apart from introduction of GPS technology to assess players' fitness and stamina levels during match situations.

Oltmans recently approached Hockey India (HI) with his three important demands – appointment of a full-time 'Strategy coach' and a 'match analyst' and to acquire a GPS system before the Hockey World League (HWL) Finals in Raipur in December.

The Dutchman Oltmans has already zeroed in on the candidate for the post of strategy coach who is from his own country. If the appointment is made, he will be the third from The Netherlands to join the Indian hockey support staff in three years.

Oltmans will soon be meeting the senior Sports Authority of India (SAI) officials in the Teams Division to get his key man appointed as early as possible.

"He will be the key man to assist me in strategising the game plan before a tournament. If I am going wrong anywhere or lacking in something, he would always come up with Plan 'B' or 'C' to help me. We both can plan coaching initiatives and work out in-depth analysis of the team," Oltmans told dna on the sidelines of Indian team's practice session on Tuesday.

"His appointment would be of real importance help to me to prepare the national side for the Rio Games with just 11 months to go for the Olympics. I have already short listed the name which I can't reveal it to you. I would be approaching the SAI with his name and I am hopeful of his appointment," he added.

Talking about the match analyst, Oltmans said the candidate would be an Indian coach and he would be providing much-needed information to video analyst, coaches and players through his statistical and performance-based intelligence.

The Indian team is in Delhi for a training stint till September 27 before leaving for New Zealand for a hockey Test series.

However, the most important area that Oltmans stressed was to put players under GPS surveillance in order to get their skills well-documented that could come in handy during upcoming intensive tournaments like HWL Finals and Rio.

According to Oltmans, the idea would be to see how much a particular player could last during high pressure games at the international level.

Indian hockey's main problem over the years has been conceding late goals against the best teams in the world. "That is because sometimes we fail to judge the fatigue factor of our players and concede goals towards the end of game. GPS training system can help us understand exactly that," Oltmans said.

"All top hockey-playing nations have been using GPS technique to understand the physical abilities of players. In today's hockey, where rolling substitution is prevalent, it would help me to decide how much a player can last under the given circumstances. The use of game-based activities as training drills allows the simulation of movement patterns of team sports, while maintaining a competitive environment where athletes must perform under pressure and fatigue. Perhaps more importantly, this will help us determining how much time should be given to a particular player during a high-intensity game. The rule of rolling substitution can thus be used to its maximum," the chief coach explained.

Meanwhile, Tushar Khandekar has replaced Jude Felix as the assistant coach of the national side after the latter submitted his resignation to the HI in July owing to personal reasons.
