India's highest wicket-taker in ODIs and Tests, Anil Kumble, who is now entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the Indian cricket team, is definitely one of the greatest cricketers to be produced in this country. Being the fourth Indian after Kapil Dev, Bishen Singh Bedi and Sunil Gavaskar to be inducted in the ICC hall of fame, he has had spectacular moments on the cricket field which will forever be etched in the memory of Indians.

Before the veteran leg-spinner joins the national camp ahead of India's tour to West Indies, we take a look at some of his legendary feats:-

1. 6 for 12 v/s West Indies, 1993 Hero Cup finals

In the match that took place at Eden Gardens, West Indies chasing 226 for victory, tumbled despite having the likes of Brian Lara, Jimmy Adams and Carl Hooper in their batting line up. Kumble, accounting for six wickets while conceding only 12 runs, recorded the then best ODI figures by an Indian. This record was broken by Stuart Binny against Bangladesh as he picked up six wickets for four runs.

2. 10 for 74 v/s Pakistan in Feroz Shah Kotla, Delhi (1999)

Kumble spelled Pakistan's doom with his deadly bowling in the fourth innings of the second Test. Pakistan needed 420 to win the match and despite a brilliant 100-plus partnership between Saeed Anwar and Shahid Afridi, the visitors couldn't cross the line thanks to the leggie's brilliance. It is still one of the most cherished days in India's cricketing history. From being 101 for no loss to 207 all out, that's the last thing that Pakistani players had expected. Jumbo's 10-wicket haul also helped India beat their arch rivals for the first time at home in 26 years.

3. Jaw-breaking West Indies tour in 2002

Kumble was struck by a Mervyn Dillon bouncer, the impact of which was so massive that it broke his jaw. The Karnataka man played on for 20 more minutes and then came back in the next innings with bandaged jaw and dismissed Brian Lara for four. He was quoted after the match saying, "At least I can go home with the thought that I tried my best."

4. England tour in 2007; first international century

The third and final test of that English tour at The Oval was where Kumble scored his first International century. What made Kumble's ton even more important and special was that no other batsman including Sachin Tendulkar, VVS Laxman, Saurav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid could manage to reach the three-figure mark in the entire tour.

5. Post-Sydney Test press conference in 2008

A lot of decisions went against India in the second Test at Sydney and consequently the visitors suffered a heavy defeat. Captain Kumble addressed the press saying, “Only one team played in the spirit of the game”. That comment is still regarded as the wittiest dialogue ever uttered by an India captain.
