“If each guy saves me one run, it gives me 10 runs” - Jonty Rhodes

Catches win you matches. As clichéd as this might sound, the fact is in today’s day and age, fielding is an indispensable part of the gentleman’s game.  Looking back at some of the most stellar fielders of the modern game, the likes of Jonty Rhodes, Ricky Ponting, Paul Collingwood were players who always wanted to ball to come to them.

One common characteristic that these fielders had was anticipation. They expected every ball to come to them and were disappointed if it didn’t.  After all one scintillating catch or stop can lift the entire team’s confidence.

Here are some players that we’d pay, to watch them field at the upcoming cricket World Cup

Faf du Plessis - South African batsman and T20 captain Faf, is no stranger in the fielding world. He is an attacking fielder who consistently plucks catches out of thin air.  The man from Pretoria has an impressive thirty nine catches to his name in sixty seven matches in one day internationals (ODI).  Below is the video where he takes an absolutely marvelous catch to dismiss Shikhar Dhawan.

Martin Guptill - Martin Guptill is definitely the coolest fielder on this list.  The man from Auckland has a habit of pulling our blinders with relative ease.  You will normally find him at deep square leg or at long on/off position. He is six feet two inches tall which makes him a perfect fit at the boundary. Here is one among many of the calm and collective catches taken by Guppy a.k.a The Fish.

David Warner: Next on the list is the Australian mini tank David Warner. Although he’s lately been in the news for his persistent sledging against the Indian cricketers, there is no denying that Warner is currently one of the top five fielders in the world.

This versatile fielder can play the role of both an attacking and defensive fielder. When wickets are the need of the hour, you will find him at long-off, long-on or even silly mid -on waiting to pounce on any kind of action.  He is also highly effective when he plays as a sweeper on the field.  Check out this acrobatic piece of fielding by the man from New South Wales.

Brendon McCullum: Thirty-three year old Brendon McCullum may not have age on his side but isn’t age just a number? And he’s definitely put numbers on the board when it comes to catches. Brendon has taken an astounding 250 catches in his one day career. Even more startling is the fact that he’s done this in just 238 matches.

McCullum is the kind of fielder who pops up in catching positions silently and takes the batsman by surprise. This impeccable catch from the Black Caps captain sees him hanging in the air for quite some time.

MS Dhoni: It wasn’t long ago when the Indian team was criticized for their shoddy fielding by captain M.S.Dhoni himself. Back in 2009, the Indian team collectively dropped twelve catches in ninety over’s against Sri Lanka.  Fast forward to 2015 and India can now boast of quite a few talented fielders.

Suresh Raina: One of them is Suresh Raina. Alert and agile on the field, Raina has been consistently putting in exemplary performances on the field.  Like Warner, Raina is comfortable in fielding at any position owing to his immaculate technique. Standing at extra cover, Raina takes an incredible catch.

AB De Villiers: Any fielding list like this wouldn’t look right if it isn’t dominated by South Africans. Over the years, the Proteas have been known for consistently churning out stellar fielders like Jonty Rhodes, Herschelle Gibbs etc. AB de Villiers is another fielder to look out for at this World Cup. Whether he’s behind the stumps or fielding at point, he regularly produces moments of magic like the video below.

Notable mentions:

Adam Milne: While the above list consisted of the cream of the crop, here are some notable mentions who might not be known for their fielding prowess, but have pulled out some amazing catches nonetheless. NewZealand’s Adam Milne is known for his bowling speed but he’s also a pretty useful asset on the field. Standing at extra cover, Milne manages to take this catch in spite of missing it at the first attempt.

Andre Russel: West Indian all rounder Andre Russell was at his athletic best when he made this stop to save six valuable runs for his team. Even the commentator thought that the ball had passed over his head for a six. This stop at the boundary almost looks like the big man from Jamaica is making a slam dunk on the cricket field.  Farfetched stuff from the allrounder.
