Champions are made of sterner stuff. They know what it needs to be on the top. Geoffrey Kamworor Kipsang was a picture of confidence before the race began. The way he set the pace left the other runners wondering if they could match his strides. All the runners, it seems, needed a pair of skates to be in the reckoning.

Off to a thunderous applause when the much-hyped TCS 10K run began, Kipsang, who looked well prepared for the event, won comfortably while erasing the six-year-old record with a superb timing of 27:44s. On the other hand, Lucy Kabuu completed the Kenyan double by winning the women's race in 31:48s.

A silver medalist in 10,000m at Delhi Commonwealth Games four years ago, Daniel Salel led the field for most part of the first half. Defending champion Alex Oloitiptip and his Kenyan teammate Kipsang were tracking the leader as also Ethiopian Kinde Atanaw. Incidentally, the Ethiopian has the fastest time of 27:36s, which he clocked during his second-place finish at Prague last year. Atanaw kept pace with Kipsang before the Kenyan surged ahead after 6-km mark.

Elated with his feat, Kipsang said: "I had one target when I landed in Bangalore and that was to break the course record. I am thrilled because I have done that. I won because I was well-prepared though the conditions were not conducive. I upped the momentum after the 5-km mark and the rest is history."

Among Indians, it was third-time lucky for Army lad BC Tilak of Bangalore, who won in 30:26. Anish Thapa from Meghalaya found the weather conditions hot and humid, yet managed to finish second (30:38) behind Tilak on his debut over the 10K course.

Swati Gadhave won the women's section among the Indian runners by leaving behind some of the leading names in the sport.
