Usman Khawaja was, perhaps, robbed of a career-saving knock by the Decision Review System on Thursday. It was not the first time that the system was in the news for the wrong reasons. The cricketing world is slowly coming to terms with something that the BCCI has always maintained — that the system is flawed. Steve Waugh, though, is a supporter of DRS.

On Friday, the former Aussie skipper said even “the umpires need two referrals”. “DRS is pretty good for the game,” the 48-year-old said on the sidelines of a seminar, ‘Real Estate in Digitized World’, by the Indian Advertising Association. “DRS is a good system in conjunction with good umpiring. When the umpiring is not of top quality standard, it puts more pressure on DRS. In DRS, you get more decisions right than wrong. They have got to improve the technology. It is not a perfect system.”

Waugh, who once led Australia to 16 Test wins in a row, said he was not hurt by the current side losing six on the trot. “England are enjoying the fact that they are beating Australia. I know we won eight Ashes series in a row (1989-2002). They have turned it around. We were beaten by a very good Indian side over here recently. We have lost the first two Tests. We will fight back. I am confident Australia will get back towards the top in the next 12-18 months,” he said.

So what’s his advice to Michael Clarke. “He has to keep scoring runs. As a captain, it is a lot easier when you are scoring runs. He is doing a good job. Things will turn around as long as they stick together and help each other.”

Waugh also paid rich tributes to Tendulkar. “To have played 198 Tests is amazing, a great achievement. He probably holds every record except what Don Bradman has. To be playing 200 Tests, that’s a holy grail. I don’t think anyone can reach 200 Tests.”

Waugh also sees Virat Kohli as India’s future leader. “I have not seen a lot of Virat. But he is a talented player and potential captain for sure. He is very excitable, he’s got passion that is good.”

He also lauded current India captain MS Dhoni for “winning every trophy he possibly could.”
