Brazilian football legend Pele is in intensive care, according to reports in foreign news media.

The 74-year-old was admitted to a Sao Paulo hospital suffering from a urinary infection on Tuesday after undergoing surgery on kidney stones at the beginning of the month.

Doctors at the Albert Einstein Hospital had only recently said that Pele was in a stable condition with his illness. However, media outlets now claim that his condition is worsening.

"Edson Arantes do Nascimento (Pele) remains in hospital. To receive the best care he was transferred in order to be monitored in a special care unit," read a statement released by the hospital.

Following his recent discharge on 15 November, Pele's personal aide Jose Fornos Rodrigues had told Reuters: "He made some tests and will be discharged tomorrow. Everything is fine."

Pele is regarded as arguably the greatest player of all time, having made 656 competitive appearances for Santos, whilst also holding the record for Brazil's top goalscorer with 77 goals in 92 games.
