As the Indian Cricket Team faces Jason Holder-led West Indies on Friday March 6, 2015 at the WACA, Perth in the ICC World Cup 2015, they will look to retain the top spot in Pool B by beating their Caribbean counterparts who are currently placed uneasily at fourth position.

India will look to maintain their fine run in the quadrennial event after winning their previous games against South Africa, Pakistan and UAE.

India and West Indies have had rich tradition and history of squaring against each other that can be traced to as early as 1979. The two teams have played each other seven times at World Cups alone and Sunday's match will be their eighth encounter. India have won 4 against West Indies' 3 wins.

Top 5 India-West Indies World Cup encounters:

1. 1979, June 9. Edgbaston, Birmingham.

In a Group B clash at the World Cup Srinivas Venkataraghavan-led India suffered a drubbing at the hands of West Indies. Clive Lloyd's team beat India by 9 wickets (with 51 balls remaining). After winning the toss the West Indies chose to field and bowled out India for a total score of 190. Not a single player except Gundappa Viswanath managed to score more than 20 runs. Viswanath top scored with 75 runs.

West Indies looked like a complete unit with contributions coming in from all departments. Michael Holding left Indian batsmen reeling with figures of 4-33.

Gordon Greenidge's knock of 106 sank India and helped Windies achieve 194.

 
 
2. 1983, 25 June. Lord's, London
 
In the Finals India went on to beat West Indies by 43 runs. The Kapil Dev-led side clinched the World Cup to give India its maiden trophy. 

West Indies chose to field and were successful in finishing off India's innings for 183 runs. Andy Roberts' 3-32 figures hurt India. 

Balwinder Sandhu, Madan Lal and MOhinder Amarnath split 8 wickets between them to torment the opposition and pavk off their innings for 140 runs. 

Amarnath was adjudjed Player of the match for his impressive 3-12 figures.

 

3. March 10, 1992. Basin Reserve, Wellington 

Winning the toss India elected to bat. Mohammad Azharuddin's side scored a paltry 197 in 50 overs. Azharuddin was the only top scorer in his side with 61 from 84 balls.

Keith Arthurton remained 58 not out and helped his team comfortably chase the small target in 40.2 overs.

AC Cummins was awarded Player of the match for his 4-33 performance.

West Indies won by 5 wickets (with 34 balls remaining) 

 

4. February 21. 1996. Captain Roop Singh Stadium, Gwalior

In a Group A encounter, India led by Mohammad Azharuddin won by 5 wickets (with 62 balls remaining) after West Indies chose to bat and were restricted only to 173 runs. Brilliant bowling by Manoj Prabhakar, Anil Kumble and Javagal Srinath shared the spoils of 8 wickets between them. 

Sachin Tendulkar's knock of 70 in 91 balls helped India ease to the target of 174. 

This match was the 5th consecutive ODI win by India against West Indies.

 

5. March 20, 2011. MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai

India chose to bat in front of a strong home crowd in a Group B clash against West Indies.

After Gautam Gambhir and Sachin Tendulkar got out cheaply scoring 22 and 2 runs respectively Virat Kohli and flamboyant all-rounder Yuvraj Singh provided just the kind of firepower India needed. A strong innings by Singh and Kohli laboured India to 268 after the remaining batsmen failed to contribute with the willow. 

Ravi Rampaul got a fifer and he dismissed Kohli, Tendulkar, Gambhir, Zaheer Khan and Yusuf Pathan.

Indian bowlers worked in tandem to get the visitors all out for 188. 

Three and two wickets by Zaheer and R Ashwin respectively helped India inch closer to victory.

Yuvraj too chipped in with two handy wickets. He was adjudged Player of the match for his all-round performance.
