Like his Juventus and Italy predecessor Dino Zoff, Gianluigi Buffon is widely considered as one of the greatest goalkeepers in history. Since making his Azzurri debut against Russia on October 29, 1997, he has collected 139 caps for his country. He also played a crucial role in his side’s historic triumph at the 2006 World Cup in Germany. Buffon was especially impressive during the penalty shootout in the final against France. He was also voted the best goalkeeper of the tournament. He took over the captain’s armband when Cesare Prandelli became coach in 2010.
