Zidane carved his named into French folklore by scoring two goals in his side’s triumph over Brazil in the 1998 World Cup final. International success continued as he added a Euro 2000 crown to his trophy cabinet. He was instrumental in the Les Blues’ run to the final in the 2006 edition where he gave his side the lead against Italy. But his career ended in unceremonious fashion as he was sent off in extra-time for headbutting Marco Materazzi with the scores tied at 1-1. His exclusion from the penalty shootout proved costly as the Azzuri won their third World Cup winning 5-3 on penalties.
