Team News

Belgium head into their Euro 2016 clash with the Republic of Ireland on Saturday desperate to atone for their opening defeat to Italy as debate rages about whether Romelu Lukaku should be dropped.

Marc Wilmots' much-fancied side are second in the FIFA world rankings but they disappointed in a 0-2 loss to Italy in their first Group E outing in Lyon on Monday.

Lukaku's profligacy in front of goal contributed to that loss and coach Wilmots has indicated that, with Michy Batshuayi, Divock Origi and Christian Benteke all waiting in the wings, the Everton striker could pay the price in Bordeaux.

“Certain other strikers are working very well in training and will maybe get their chance,” Wilmots said at the Belgian base before implicitly criticising Lukaku's work-rate. “I want more pressure on the opposition defence. I watched Romania's striker (Florin Andone) against France. He works hard for the team. That's important.” Lukaku is far from the only Belgian player in the firing line, however, as midfield duo Marouane Fellaini and Radja Nainggolan as well as right-back Laurent Ciman are also at risk of being dropped for the match at the impressive Matmut Atlantique stadium.

Either captain Eden Hazard or Kevin De Bruyne -- who have both been back in training after picking up knocks against Italy -- could play in a central role behind the striker while Dries Mertens, of Napoli, is a contender to start. Another defeat for Belgium could prove fatal to their prospects, although it is half a century since they lost to Ireland and they have never been beaten by the Irish in a competitive game.

Ireland are looking to build on a promising display in drawing 1-1 with Zlatan Ibrahimovic's Sweden at the Stade de France in a match that featured a brilliant goal by diminutive playmaker Wes Hoolahan. Martin O'Neill's side already have one point more than they garnered in three games at Euro 2012 but the manager knows Belgium represent an altogether different challenge to that posed by a limited Sweden.

“When the group was announced, I think that Belgium finishing any worse than second is not something that they would have contemplated, so they will be coming out all guns blazing,” O'Neill said at Ireland's base in Versailles, near Paris.

"They are possibly the most talented set of individual players at the tournament, that would be my view of them. "It will be a tough night for us. We want to try to make it as tough for them as well."

DEADLY DUEL

Kevin De Bruyne

Wes Hoolahan (Ireland)
Age: 34
Position: Midfielder
Caps: 31

Belgium's top gun De Bruyne was silent in the clash against Italy and will therefore be expected to make amends in this second game. The Green Army's Wes Hoolahan hit the net in the fixture against the Swedes, providing them the lead before an upsetting own goal. An in-song Hoolahan could be menacing in the midfield again.

STAT ATTACK
Belgium have lost six of their last eight Euro games, going down by identical 0-2 scoreline in their last three ties. Republic of Ireland have never scored more than one goal in a game at Euro. Eden Hazard has not scored in 458 minutes at major tournaments (World Cup + Euro).

Watch out for Shane Long: Courtois

Shane Long

Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has warned his team mates to be wary of Ireland striker Shane Long when the two countries meet in Euro 2016 on Saturday.
"He is strong, quick and very good with his heading. I think he is as good as any of our strikers," warned Courtois, who Long scored past when the striker's Southampton side lost 2-1 to Chelsea in February.
Courtois, who was beaten twice in Belgium's opening game when they lost to Italy in Lyon on Monday, was critical of several of his team mates and the overall tactical approach following that game.
At Friday's pre-match news conference, he maintained that some players did not perform at their best against Italy.
"I think only that some individuals did not exercise their functions well," he said.
"But you have to keep learning. I think tactically we stood our ground against Italy. We just need to be more efficient in delivering a knockout blow. That was our problem in the warm-up matches also."

Roy Keane worried about Hazard

Roy Keane says Ireland will need to be wary of Eden Hazard when they meet Belgium in Saturday's European Championship match, despite the winger's disappointing season with Chelsea. Hazard endured a difficult start to the season, but improved his form dramatically towards the end of the campaign and racked up four goals in his last five league games.

"I don't know what's going on at club level with the guy but he's a talented boy," the Ireland assistant coach told reporters in France. "But it does happen, players have dips in form. He's still an absolutely dangerous player and he showed a bit of better form before the end of the season for Chelsea. We'll have to keep an eye on him."

The 44-year-old former Manchester United captain has also been impressed by Belgium and United midfielder Marouane Fellaini, who made his bow at the European Championship in Belgium's 2-0 loss to Italy on Monday. "I like him. I thought the criticism he had when he went to United was a bit over the top," Keane added.
"I saw him a few times live when United weren't great and thought he did okay, but he seemed to be the scapegoat for the fans. We saw him recently scoring some important goals."
Ireland, who opened their campaign with a 1-1 draw with Sweden, face Italy in their final group stage on June 22.
