Former England football team captain Rio Ferdinand has said that he is planning to retire from the sport at the end of the current domestic season.

The Queens Park Rangers defender said that he thought this season with his current club, currently at the bottom of the Premier League, would be his last as a professional footballer.

The veteran centre-back revealed that he probably thinks he would retire at the end of this season, adding that he is not fearful of retirement and is looking forward to it, The Daily Star reported.

Ferdinand said that he could see some good stuff hopefully happening ahead. He said that one gets to a time where one starts understanding that their body and the strains playing football is putting their body through, going out and training every day.

Ferdinand started his career at West Ham United before high-profile moves to Leeds United and then Manchester United, where he became a mainstay of the last of veteran manager Alex Ferguson's several trophy-winning teams at Old Trafford.

Having already done some work as a television pundit, Ferdinand said that he intended to remain involved in football in some capacity. He said that he has done it for so many years, it's what he loves.

The centre-back added that he would stay in football he is sure in some capacity.

Ferdinand, who won 81 caps for England, is also a member of a commission set up by FA chairman Greg Dyke to investigate how to improve English football, the report added.
