As thousands of ecstatic Bangladeshi cricket fans roared their team on to a sensational 15-run win over the beleaguered England team at the Adelaide Oval on Monday, Alastair Cook must have been shaking his head at his team's current predicament.

The 'mighty' English now have to play an inconsequential final group game against Afghanistan, before they pack up and head back home.

England desperately missed the ice-cool captaincy of the ousted Cook, who would definitely have done a better job as captain than Eoin Morgan.

Cook - one of England's most mercurial talents - was left out of the World Cup squad, post a horrendous run with the bat in 2014, which gave the ECB enough incentive to axe him.

But the fact is that Cook's ouster suddenly altered dynamics of the current squad, as current skipper Eoin Morgan struggled to inspire the team during the ongoing tournament.

Cook's calm and level-headed captaincy may have helped England stay afloat, and probably even inspire them to win a game or two, which could definitely have boosted their quarter-final hopes by a huge margin.

Agreed that Cook's poor form with the bat was reason enough for his ouster, but the fact remains that he always had better leadership skills than Morgan.

Even if the 5-2 away hammering against Sri Lanka in late 2014 proved to be the final straw for Cook's tenure, he still could have solved his batting woes with a good knock or two in the pre-tournament warm-up matches.

On the other hand, Morgan scored a mere 90 runs in England's five World Cup games so far, and that is quite a damning statistic, when he was expected to stand up and deliver.

Given the current situation, even Cook's 'dismal' average of 27.52 in 20 ODI matches prior to the start of the tournament, resembles a bright spot amongst the dark shadows hanging over English cricket.

The ECB have definitely erred in handing over the captaincy baton to Morgan, which burdened him with additional responsibility and also took a toll on his batting form in the process.

Though it can be debated that Morgan was 'senior' enough to take over the responsibility, England's humiliating exit only suggests that he is definitely not a born leader of men.

The best the ECB can now do is to let bygones be bygones and allow themselves to recuperate post this harrowing exit.

With a hectic schedule on the cards for 2015, which includes a tour to the West Indies and also an Ashes series against Australia at home, the ECB may do well to recover from this World Cup debacle and try and restore parity in English cricket.

Though it may never be known as to whether Cook's inclusion in the World Cup team could have turned things in England's favour, the ECB may have to swallow its pride and include him in the future scheme of things.

And of course, somewhere, someplace, a certain Kevin Pietersen may well be rolling over in laughter!
