East Zone clinched the Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 inter zonal tournament after they continued their unbeaten streak by defeating West Zone by eight wickets here on Saturday.

Put into bat first, the Parthiv Patel-led West Zone kept losing wickets at regular intervals, failing to build any kind of momentum. However, Prerak Mankad (20) and Rujul Bhatt (36*) added 53 for the fifth wicket to help their team to a respectable total of 149/5 against an attack that had the likes of Ashoke Dinda and Shahbaz Nadeem missing the game.

In their chase, East Zone began in style with openers Arun Karthik and Virat Singh adding 61 runs for the first wicket inside six overs before the former perished.

Virat, who scored an unbeaten 74 in the last game against North Zone, went on to complete his fifty in the ninth over. Jaggi, on the other hand, also took on the opposition as he hit six maximums and three fours before falling for 56.

However, the job was done by then. Needing just nine runs to win, skipper Manoj Tiwary applied the finishing touches as East emerged victorious with 38 balls to spare.

Jaggi, who scored a 30-ball 56, was happy that his team shrugged off the underdog status to win the tournament.

"When the tournament started we were underdogs and nobody was counting us and we knew that. Manoj bhaiya and Rajeev Kumar (coach) emphasised on playing good cricket and not to worry about results. T20 cricket is about momentum and after we won the first game we carried it."

Brief Scores: West Zone 149/5 in 20 overs (Sheldon Jackson 52, Rujul Bhatt 36*; Pritam Das 2/25) lost to East Zone 153/2 in 13.4 overs (Virat Singh 58*, Ishank Jaggi 56; Shardul Thakur 2/31) by 8 wickets; South Zone 181/7 in 20 overs (Vijay Shankar 40, Dinesh Karthik 35; Ankit Rajpoot 2/28) lost to Central Zone 184/8 in 20 overs (Harpreet Singh 92, Amandeep Khare 39; Rahil Shah 2/20) by 2 wickets
