In some good news for football lovers in the city, the organising committee of the FIFA 2017 U-17 World Cup on Wednesday announced that they they have given their provisional approval to the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to be one of the six venues.

The tournament director, Chilean Javier Chepii said, "We had a meeting of the local organising committee last week. The DY Patil Sports Academy in Navi Mumbai is one of the four venues which we have shortlisted and given provisional approval subject to ratification in September 2016 on the basis of compliance with FIFA guidelines."

Apart from the DY Patil Stadium, Guwahati, Kolkata and Kochi have also been given provisional approval, while two among Goa, Chennai, Delhi, Bengaluru and Pune will also be given approval in the near future.

Cepii further said that it was now entirely up to the Sports Academy to fulfil the compliance criteria for final ratification which will be held in September 2016.

To host such an event, there needs to be at least six practise venues near the DY Patil Sports Academy ground. Dr Vijay Patil, who was also present at the media briefing, said that all six have been identified. One of them being the Navi Mumbai Sports Association ground at Vashi.

The tournament will be conducted during the September-October window with the AIFF being consulted regarding the dates. "We know that the ISL and I-League are held around that time, but the Under-17 World Cup is the first such tournament which will be hosted by India in 87 years since the first World Cup was held. All the tournaments are conducted by the AIFF and they had no problem with the dates chosen for this world event," Cepii said.
