Call it overconfidence or just self-belief, Don Bosco (Matunga) played without a goalkeeper and defeated St Joseph (Orlem) 21-0 in the U-16 Ahmed Sailor hockey league at the MHAL stadium, Churchgate, on Monday.
Pierre Noronha and Schneider Andrade scored four goals each in their team’s win.
About playing without a goalkeeper, Don Bosco coach Javed Sayyed said, “We didn’t need a ‘keeper because we knew the opposite team was weak. Had we conceded a goal, we would have sent our ‘keeper in.”
The ‘Dons’ of Matunga are defending champions and they didn’t appear to have any trouble with in the goal department, scoring at will. Aidan D’costa opened the scoring in the first minute, and there was no looking back after that.
This win comes five days after Don Bosco won the U-16 MSSA-MI division I football league.
When asked if they didn’t pity their opponents. Sayyed said he was actually unhappy with the result because he felt his team could score many more.
“It was like a practice match for us because we got just two days to train as most of the boys were busy playing the football tournament.
St. Joseph’s coach Prashant Chaudari said lack of ground to practise is their main concern.
“There’s no place where we can hold practice sessions. So I don’t expect the team to perform well. We are forced to train in school corridors.”
In another game, St. Stanislaus (Bandra) thrashed St. Theresa (Bandra) 10-0.
