Star Sports, the Board of Control for Cricket in India's (BCCI) official broadcaster of all of Team India's matches, has been running a strong advertisement campaign for the upcoming Champions Trophy. In the ads, a catchy tune in the background is accompanied by the catch-line "Har koi har koi dekhega" (everyone will watch). As it turns out, they might soon have to change the phrase to "Koi nahin dekhega" (no one will watch).
With the International Cricket Council (ICC) keen on reducing the Indian cricket board's share in resources, fans could well miss out on watching Team India in action during the Champions Trophy, also known as the Mini World Cup.
Rumours after BCCI's two-hour long Special General Meeting suggest that the world's richest cricket board is considering taking some strong action in response to ICC's decision to dissolve the 'Big Three' of world cricket. And what could be a bigger statement than pulling out the Indian team, who are the defending champions, from the tournament.
BCCI is insistent that the ICC doesn't tamper with the excess power granted to three power-house nations - India, England and Australia. In the current scheme, the boards of these three countries enjoy a much bigger share in ICC's global revenues and every big decision is taken after their stamp of approval.
According to an anonymous source of the BCCI, the board "reserves its rights to take all necessary decisions to exercise the rights under the Members Participation Agreement".
If Virat Kohli and his boys end up not participating in the tournament, it will indeed be a major blow to the ICC. The Indian cricket team's global fan-following is unparalleled and their absence will take away much of the sheen from the event.
Team India are to begin their campaign against arch rivals Pakistan on June 4, with the tournament scheduled to be played from June 1 to 18.
