It was supposed to be the selection tournament to pick the Mumbai teams, but the U-25 Shalini Bhalekar Trophy and U-19 Sportstar Trophy tourneys ended as a damp squib after the tournament was advanced to September.

Out of three league games, first two league games were washed out robbing the players of a chance to showcase their skills and form.

Former India skipper Dilip Vengsarkar slammed the Mumbai Cricket Association management for the wrong scheduling.

“Unfortunately, this is the only match of the selection tournament. Don’t know why this was played in September when you know its monsoon. It is sheer waste of time, money, energy and opportunity,” he said during presentation ceremony here on Thursday.

Earlier, both the tournaments were played in October ahead of the respective BCCI tournaments.  “It is not only the U-25 tourney, but also with the U-19 tournament. The first two games were not played in that tourney too. Also, last week the Kanga matches were washed out. Don’t make a mess of the system,” Vengsarkar added.

The former MCA vice president was also critical of the restructuring of the Kanga League. “I came into limelight at a young age because I did well in Purshottam Shield. These scheduling mistakes have made a mockery of Mumbai cricket,” he said.

MCA joint secretary Nitin Dalal agreed with Vengsarkar.  “I feel that it would be proper to play these tournaments in October. We had come up with the new structural Kanga League format that’s why we have had to organise this in September. We will take a note of this,” Dalal said.

Vengsarkar XI bag title
