Did the selectors deny MS Dhoni his preferred team for the World Cup?

As India's selectors sat down to name the World Cup squad on Tuesday, captain MS Dhoni's preferences were apparently given a cold shoulder. This was quite unlike in the past where Dhoni's word has always been taken very seriously at selection meetings.

According to a report in Hindustan Times, Virat Kohli instead found voice at the selection meet, as the selectors considered his views before naming the squad.

The HT report claims that Dhoni wanted Murali Vijay in the squad, and either Mohit Sharma or Varun Aaron as the fifth seamer. The connection to Chennai Super Kings was undeniable. But these demands were declined, unlike in 2011 when Dhoni managed to bring Piyush Chawla into the World Cup side by prevailing upon the selectors. Interestingly, there were two rounds of discussions between Dhoni and the selectors, but the wicketkeeper batsman could not get his way.

Dhoni, who has just retired from Test cricket, was rumoured to have had a rift with new Test captain Virat Kohli just a few days ago.

The BCCI selection committee itself does not seem to be above board though. The selection of Stuart Binny, whose father Roger Binny is a selector, has raised eyebrows. Binny, essentially a medium pacer who bats, has played just six ODIs and his usefulness in Australia is questionable. Some cricket experts have justified it saying Binny would be useful in New Zealand, but India only play minnows Zimbabwe and Ireland there except for any knockout matches they may play.
