Wrestling Federation of India's vice-president Raj Singh may have put himself in the dock by allegedly filing wrong affidavit, in favour of grappler Sushil Kumar, in the Delhi High Court.

During the last hearing (on Tuesday) Raj Singh told the court that "he was the head coach at the time of 1996 Atlanta Games when trials were conducted between Pappu Yadav and Kaka Pawar to determine India's final entry".

WFI has now taken cognizance of the matter and decided to contest its vice-president's claims after going through records.

"First of all, it was only a wild card quota for India. Second, the trials were conducted under supervision of then president GS Mander and chief coach PR Sondhi. We've also found out that famous wrestler Kartar Singh was government observer while Ashwini Kumar represented as observer of Sports Authority of India," a senior WFI official told dna on Friday.

The WFI has decided to present all these facts in front of the court on May 27, the date of next hearing, and Raj Singh could face "perjury" trial for stating wrong information in the court.

Having realised his mistake, Raj Singh has now decided to withdraw his affidavit in the next hearing. "I was made chief coach soon after 1996 Olympics for the 1998 Asian Games. I probably made mistake because this incident has been two-decade old but no one can deny that trials were not conducted then," said Raj Singh.
