After a rather tame show in Rajya Sabha on Thursday, when it went with Union sports minister MS Gill in seeking divine intervention for the success of the scam-tainted Commonwealth Games (CWG), a united opposition struck back at the government on Friday accusing it of allowing “loot” of public money.
CPI member Gurudas Dasgupta was the first to raise the issue of massive corruption in the run-up to the Games during zero hour in Lok Sabha.
He was soon joined by Basudeb Acharia (CPM), Sharad Yadav (JD-U), Samajwadi Party’s Mulayam Singh Yadav and others.
Union minister for urban development S Jaipal Reddy, who also heads the group of ministers on the Games, was ready to reply to the zero-hour discussion, but BJP’s Sushma Swaraj said the opposition wanted a reply only after a full-fledged debate.
After an hour-long impromptu debate, speaker Meira Kumar adjourned the House for lunch break, even as heated exchanges between the opposition and treasury benches continued.
