Cleansing state bodies challenge before Lodha

Many former players still fear that inspite of SC giving the go-ahead to initiate Lodha recommendations, it would just be a case of 'old wine in the new bottle' that could still hamper the process of reforms in various state associations.

With Justice RM Lodha set to initiate reforms process in Indian cricket as ordered by Supreme Court special bench last week, many of the former players still fear that it would just be a case of 'old wine in the new bottle' that could still hamper the process of reforms in various state associations.

The example of Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) is foremost in front of Justice Lodha panel to decide whether there could actually be any change in administration of India's what was called by Justice Mukul Mudgal as 'most corrupt and notorious cricket association'.

This has prompted former India captain Bishan Singh Bedi, along with Kirti Azad and Surinder Khanna, to write to Justice Lodha panel to ensure that DDCA is not controlled again by the same officials who were earlier controlling the power for the last so many decades through proxy voting.

"DDCA has a provision of nominating 10 patrons. Now all those who were involved in corruption cases here could well elect themselves as patrons and keep controlling the body for many years to come. This practice has to be stopped," Member of Parliament Kirti Azad wrote to Justice Lodha panel on Sunday.

Dna has revealed in the past how DDCA's 4,000 votes are being controlled by just two or three main office bearers like vice-president CK Khanna, president Sneh Bansal and sports secretary Sunil Dev.

Other states also calling for attention

Delhi is not the only association to be taken care of. Have a look at any other association and Justice Lodha panel will realise that it would be much more difficult process for it to cleanse the states than the BCCI.

For example, in Himachal Pradesh, before Anurag Thakur took over as president in 2,000 there were just 12 districts who used to have two votes each. But after he took over, he made 25 life members of his own coterie (read Jalandhar territory) with voting rights to ensure that he stays there forever.

Similarly, Haryana has seen the Bansi Lal family control HCA for over 40 years with the help of all the domestic workers and friends.

Jammu and Kashmir Cricket Association is a pocket-borough of Farooq Abdulla or for that matter, Chennai is a bastion of N Srinivasan. Look at any corner of India and Justice Lodha will realise how Punjab is being controlled by IS Bindra and MP Pandove or Ajay Shirke controls Maharashtra.
