Churchill Brothers get second life

The 2-1 win over Salgaocar SC in I-league handed the defending champions Churchill Brothers a second life, as they survived in the elite league of the country.

After lurking at the bottom of the table with 21 points before their last encounter against the Derrick Pereira coached side Salgaocar, at the Tilak Maiden in Vsco, Goa, Churchill Brothers managed to finish 11th with a better goal average against Rangdajied United FC who finished 12th.

If Churchill Brothers would have faced a defeat, their name would have been itched in the history book for all the wrong reasons.

They would have been the first ever holders to be relegated in the Indian football league.

"You can say so, but Monday's match against Salgaocar was a different league,"said their CEO Valanka Alemao of Churchill Brothers.

"We were on tight ropes, and the boys did well and played according to the strategy and the end result said it all,"said their coach Mariano Dias, who led the side to Federation Cup win this year.

Changing coaches was the other aspect which let them down in this edition of the championship. Subhash Bhowmick was in and out of the team, and it was Dias who stood by the players side and held the side together as a team.

"Ït is a tough call, but we did our best, and managed to stay alive in the league," said Dias. However, it was the Federation Cup victory which kept their morale high. "We needed something to change in the dressing room and the Fed Cup win put us on the track," said Dias.
