Ex-Blackburn Rovers striker Chris Sutton has come down heavily on Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho for "humiliating players".

Mourinho has been in the news lately for his social media diktat at the club. The Portuguese doesn't want any distractions for his players and each member's social media activity will now be monitored by the club.

Add to that, Mourinho has been quite vocal about his doubts over Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling and Phil Jones' desire to return from injuries. "I cannot compare the way he trains and commits, the focus, the ambition. He is a long way behind," Mourinho had said of Shaw in April. And after United's draw with Swansea on Sunday, Mourinho told a packed news conference that he would prefer not to talk about Smalling and Jones.

Sutton, though, isn't impressed with Mourinho's style of openly criticising his players.

"To call them out for not playing through the pain barrier is deeply unfair," Sutton told BBC Radio 5. "Managers I have played under would say things in the dressing room but back you in public. Mourinho just shoots from the hip. I think further down the line that leads to trouble."

"Having said that, in my opinion, what he is saying to the Manchester United board is, 'I don't want these players at the club. I need to replace them'. He is not daft - he knows what he is saying," said Sutton.

Mourinho's next assignment is the Europa League semifinal first leg clash between the Red Devils and Celta Vigo on Thursday.
