Off-spinner Parvez Rasool was slammed for chewing a gum while the National Anthem of India was played during the first T20 against England in Kanpur, last month. Social media sites were flooded with posts which criticised the Kashimiri cricketer for his actions.

While Rasool had decided to keep mum at that point, he has finally broken his silence. “Let cricketers play cricket and don’t involve them into politics unnecessarily. I try to keep my focus on the game and don’t let these controversies affect me. It is already very difficult for cricketers from our region to make it into the national team and when these things happen it is very disheartening. One has to remain tough and should not give importance to such controversies,” said Rasool in an interview to ETV.

Rasool is currently in Kolkata playing in the Vijay Hazare Trophy for his state side. He missed out on an IPL contract this year but would hope to keep his place in the Indian team.
