Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo recently posted a picture on Instagram which showed him dunking a basketball. This led many people to ask – can Cristiano Ronaldo actually dunk? Anyone who has followed the former Manchester United star’s career knows that it’s a silly question.

Lionel Messi, might have beaten him to this year’s FIFA Ballon D’or but Ronaldo is capable of superhuman athletic feats and dunking shouldn’t really be a problem. Anyone who has watched him play will remember the superlative jumps where it has appeared as though he was hanging mid-air, like that header against Manchester United in the 2013 UEFA Champions League where his knee was at par with defender Patrice Evra’s head.

In fact, a bio-mechanic test on the forward at the University of Chichester in 2011, showed that he can actually jump 44cm in the air from a standing start and 78 cm with a run-up (7 cm more than the average NBA player).

Because of a strict regime, Ronaldo has a bodyweight lesser than the average supermodel. Of course, some of his abilities are genetic, boosted by years of training and strengthening of key muscles like calves, hamstrings, quads and glutes. And let’s not forget, Ronaldo wasn’t always like this.

He was a scrawny teenager when he first came to Manchester United, and it took years of training to develop into one of the fittest persons on the planet. His former power development coach, Mike Clegg had once told BBC: “I would say, physically, he is the perfect specimen. From his height to his natural body type, muscular structure, how much fat he’s got in his system, his endurance capacity, flexibility, power and strength— they are in perfect balance. He had in his mind, ‘I need to make myself special and I’m going to have to learn everything I need to become special. I’m going to have to regiment my day and my week, months and years and become as good as I can be by every possible means.'"

In fact, a documentary by Castrol found that not only could he jump more than the average NBA basketballer, he could sprint at the same level as an Olympian sprinter and also had a footballing mind which allowed him to head in balls in the dark!
