Boxing Federation of India commence 1st Elite Senior Men’s Nationals in Guwahati

A total prize purse of over four lakh will be given to the winners in all 10 categories.

Action has moved from Senior Women’s National in Hardiwar last month to Guwahati starting on Thursday with the 1st Elite Senior Men’s Nationals that will witness over 300 boxers across 37 units participate for the coveted title. The event is being organised by newly formed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) at the Nabin Chandra Bordoloi Indoor Stadium, Sarusajai. 

The event kick started on Thursday with an opening ceremony that was graced by the presence of Chief Minister of Assam Sarbananda Sonowal, Sports Minister of Assam Naba Doley and BFI President Ajay Singh. Alongside were present Jay Kowli, Secretary General, BFI,  Debojo Maharshi, Chairman Organising Committee and Hemanta Kr Kalita, Organising Secretary. 

Inaugurating the championship, Chief Minister of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal said, “Boxing has given identity to India at the international level, including Olympics.This tournament is a baby step towards our goal of making Guwahati the Sports Capital of the country. In the days to come, we will have many tournaments of such stature.”

Speaking at the occasion,  Ajay Singh, President, Boxing Federation of India, said, “The North East region of India have established itself as the emerging  powerhouse of sports in the country. We are glad to be hosting the Men’s Nationals in Guwahati and wish to celebrate the region’s contribution to the development of sports.

“We are on a lookout for talented boxers and are even initiating some exchange programs with international organisations to encourage and develop the sport in the right direction. Our women’s team will be going to Serbia for a competition post which the Australian team will be coming to India in February for a joint exercise with our pugilists,” added Singh on sidelines of inaugural ceremony of Men’s Nationals. 

Boxing Federation of India packs a powerful schedule starting Thursday till the 13th of December with lot of action from Olympic boxers like Manoj Kumar, Shiva Thapa and L Devendra Singh. 

The Championship in Guwahati that started on Thursday will conclude on 13th December. The federation has promised the prize money for the Men’s Nationals also likewise the Women’s championship.  A total prize purse of over four lakh will be given to the winners in all 10 categories. The federation also plans to pick a pool of talent for the National Camp keeping in mind the bigger part of Championships at global level.
