Bista, Herwadkar make merry

Fine centuries by openers Jay Bista and Akhil Herwadkar helped Mumbai defeat Gujarat by 154 runs in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy U-19 cricket tournament here on Monday.

Bista and Herwadkar shared 284 for the opening wicket as Mumbai raced to 363/5 in 50 overs. In reply, the hosts were dismissed for 209 in 36 overs.

Opting to bat, Mumbai made a mockery of the Gujarat bowlers. Bista made 163 off 134 deliveries with 16 fours and seven sixes while Herwadkar made 148 in 138 balls with 10 fours and five sixes. The two dominated with their big-hitting abilities so much so that the ball was lost twice, forcing the reserve umpire to sprint on to the field with replacement balls.

When their turn to chase 364 came, Gujarat were never in the hunt. Aditya Dhumal (4/17) and Akash Parkar (3/49) were Mumbai’s best bowlers, also giving their team a bonus point.
