The Maharashtra assembly and council on Tuesday passed a resolution asking the central government to confer the Bharat Ratna, the country’s highest civilian award, on Sachin Tendulkar for his contribution to Indian cricket. In an unprecedented gesture, they also paid tribute to the Indian cricket team for its World Cup victory.

The congratulatory resolution was moved by the chief minister and leader of the lower house Prithviraj Chavan during zero hour. Chavan also proposed to recommend Tendulkar’s name for the Bharat Ratna.

The assembly passed the resolution unanimously by thumping the benches. Leader of opposition Eknath Khadse said that Sachin Tendulkar deserved the Bharat Ratna because of his achievements during his 21-year-long career.

The speaker then requested the house to give a standing ovation to the Indian team. The entire house obliged while shouting slogans in praise of the team and the country.

"We unanimously recommend the Centre for awarding the Bharat Ratna award for Sachin Tendulkar,” deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said in the council.

He added that the state government would felicitate both Maharashtra players — Sachin Tendulkar and Zaheer Khan — with Rs1 crore and a certificate.

Some members also urged the Maharashtra government to allow the additional Floor Space Index that Tendulkar had requested for building a gymnasium in his bungalow at Perry Cross road in Bandra.
