The newly-formed Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has decided to induct boxers — both former and current — in its Executive Committee (EC) to ensure players' active participation in the decision-making process.

This will be done to give players a 25 per cent participation, both men and women as per the provisions of Sports Code, in the body. However, the total strength of the EC is still to be worked out for which the elections will be conducted on May 8. The venue has still not been selected.

There are very few sports federations in the country that boast of such representation of sportspersons in their respective ECs. As per the key member of AIBA-appointed ad-hoc committee, Jay Kawli, the two past performers and two practising pugilists (one man and woman each) will be appointed through an independent election amongst the boxers.

Kawli, who is secretary of AIBA's athletes and youth commission, pioneered this move recently during BFI's meet in Kolkata by convincing the Indian boxing officials to have such provision in the constitution. "The ad-hoc committee has been entrusted to look after the continued participation of boxers internationally and forming a new federation by conducting the elections smoothly. This revolutionary step in Indian boxing is a part of this process where we want to maximise the participation of boxers in day-to-day functioning of the BFI. Their views and suggestions will be of utmost importance to us keeping in mind what happened previously," said Kawli.

Another important development is the introduction of zonal representation system in the BFI's EC.

"I had discussed this proposed step, along with many other changes in Indian boxing, with the AIBA members and IOC officials during my recent visit to Lausanne for the 7th IOC Athletes' Forum. It took me considerable amount of time to convince the IABF and Boxing India (BI) officials, who are coming under one body BFI, to include the boxers in our EC. And, I am happy to inform that all have agreed to this move now which is a fantastic beginning. This proposal has been passed at the BFI's first General Council Meeting in Kolkata," he added.

BFI's new constitution divides India into eight zones — each having about four-five state units and its 16 EC Members. The eight zonal vice presidents and an equal number of zonal secretaries will be selected from these eight zones by its all India voters — two each from BFI's 36 member states and Union Territories.

This will help in ending the syndication of one region or a group, as the zonal representation will ensure equal voting rights.
