Ben Stokes takes four to hand England 45-run first innings lead against Bangladesh

Ben Stokes triggered a Bangladesh batting collapse by taking four wickets on a pitch unresponsive for pace bowlers to help England claim a first-innings lead of 45 runs in the opening test on Saturday.

The hosts looked as if they would get their noses in front when they resumed the third day on 221 for five but England needed just over an hour to bundle them out for 248.

On a spinning track at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, where scoring runs was becoming increasingly difficult, England also suffered early losses in their second innings and were 28 for three at lunch, with an overall lead of 73.

After Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan (31) had fallen on the second ball of the morning to off-spinner Moeen Ali, he then picked up the wickets of Ben Duckett and Joe Root, while debutant spinner Mehedi Hasan sent back England captain Alastair Cook.

Stokes had dismissed Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim (48) shortly before the close of play on Friday, getting the ball to reverse swing and extracting ample bounce off the slow pitch. He continued to swing the ball in the morning, adding the wickets of debutant Sabbir Rahman, Mehedi and Kamrul Islam to his tally.

Moeen finished with three wickets as Bangladesh lost their last six wickets for 27 runs.
