The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) during its special general meeting (SGM) last week gave its representative a mandate in writing to withdraw from the forthcoming Champions Trophy if its concerns are not addressed.

The BCCI’s acting secretary Amitabh Chaudhary and Anirudh Chaudhary, who reached Dubai on Monday for the International Cricket Council’s meeting (April 26-27), met representatives of five boards to explain their position.

According to a source, all five were of the opinion that the new revenue sharing model is of no benefit to them and “a middle path has to be adopted to in order to save upcoming champions Trophy and world cricket”.

“We expressed our concerns to the member countries and they appreciated BCCI’s stand. We are hopeful of finding a middle path before entering the ICC board meeting on April 26,” said a member of the Indian delegation from Dubai.

“We have told the other boards that this is why we have come early to present the real situation to them.”

Though the deadline for announcing the team for the Champions Trophy, to be held in England from June 1 is Tuesday (April 25), the BCCI has decided to give it a miss with a wait and watch approach.

Going by the documents that BCCI officials will be carrying to the meeting, they might be unwilling to concede even an inch from the stand taken by BCCI. Going through the documents, which are available with DNA, Following are major concerns for BCCI:

Not honouring the 2014 revenue model, which ensures India a much bigger pie of the ICC revenue as was agreed upon during N Srinivasan’s tenure. As per a conservative estimate, India will be deprived of its 34 per cent share in ICC revenues. And that could translate into a loss of more than Rs 100 crore for each of BCCI’s state associations.

Given the turmoil in BCCI post Supreme Court orders, other major cricketing nations joined hands to go for a bigger kill. As per the papers in possession of DNA, ICC is planning to convert the proposed 2021 Champions Trophy in India to a T20 event to be played in March 2022. This would cast a shadow on India’s money-spinning, Indian Premier League season 2022, much the way it happened in the 2011 post World Cup in India. As per BCCI’s records, 2011 IPL season was the worst in terms of spectators’ interest.

The new ICC Executive Board would redefine the power equation within the world cricket. For example, there will be a new Independent Director and who has to be a woman. With the weakened position of India in the new structure, one can reasonable assume that she may not be an Asian.

ECB (England Cricket Board) is likely to get a bigger say by virtue of Ireland getting a full vote in the new structure. And a situation like the one when Jagmohan Dalmiya in 2004 (when he ensured defeat for Sharad Pawar by casting four votes) might arise in world cricket.
