Is the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looking for an Indian for the job of the national team's head coach?

The advertisement for the vacant post, released by the BCCI on Wednesday evening, at least indicates that the board would prefer a local flavour who can easily communicate with the cricketers coming from different regions.

The BCCI has listed down nine criteria for anyone who applies for the toughest job in international cricket. However, the most interesting one is the sixth point that talks about the communication skills of the coach.

"Communication skills befitting the coach of an International team are mandatory along with the ability to effectively convey the right messages and must demonstrate proficiency in English," the point said, before continuing with:

"It is desirable to communicate in Hindi and other regional Indian languages."

The other important point that board has listed that the person applying shouldn't be involved in any controversy or have a dispute in the past. "Mandatory that the candidate should have an impeccable personal record, devoid of any past or current disputes, with any of the member boards of the ICC or its affiliates," it said apart from other requirements.

The board's desire to have a man who can communicate in Hindi or any other Indian language clearly states that it is keen to have an Indian coach unlike in the past when it has always preferred a foreign coach.

Kapil Dev was the last Indian coach before he stepped down after match in 2000 after taking over from Anshuman Gaekwad in 1999.

Post Kapil, BCCI has hired the services of John Wright, who coached for five years, followed by Greg Chappell, World Cup-winning coach Gary Kirsten and Duncan Fletcher. After Fletcher's contract came to an end with the 2015 World Cup, former India skipper Ravi Shastri was in charge as the Team Director till the 2016 World T20 in India.

Quite a few names have cropped up in the recent times for the job with the most famous being of Rahul Dravid, who has been successful as an India U-19 India coach. Names of former New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori and retired Australia batsman Mike Hussey also did the rounds. Recent reports are that Shastri has shown keen interest as a coach.

Meanwhile, the BCCI is sending Sanjay Bangar as the head coach for the young Indian team led by MS Dhoni for the Zimbabwe tour as a stopgap arrangement.

The candidates are required to send the application on or before June 10 to Coachappointment@bcci.tv.
