Barcelona's Luis Suarez absent from FIFA's Ballon d'Or shortlist

Cristiano Ronaldo currently holds the prestigious award.

The shortlist for the 2014 Ballon d'Or has been released by FIFA, and the likes of Lionel Messi and current award holder Cristiano Ronaldo, are in the running to win the prestigious award.

Barcelona hitman Luis Suarez, is the most notable absentee from the list, despite having had a terrific 2013-14 season, and also winning the Golden Shoe award recently.

Also present in the list are names like Wales' Gareth Bale and Argentina's World Cup runner-up Angel Di Maria, who are expected to give tough competition to Messi and Ronaldo.

Di Maria (Manchester United), Thibault Courtois (Chelsea), Diego Costa (Chelsea), Eden Hazard (Chelsea) and Yaya Toure (Manchester City) represent the Premier League contingent in the list.

Real Madrid has Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Toni Kroos, Sergio Ramos,James Rodriguez and Ronaldo in the running, whereas arch rivals Barcelona have Neymar, Javier Mascherano, Andres Iniesta and Messi in the contenders list.
 
2014 World Cup winners Germany have Thomas Muller, Manuel Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger,Mario Gotze and Kroos shortlisted, and the list ends with Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Paris Saint Germain), Paul Pogba (Juventus), and Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich).

 

Apart from the Ballon d'Or nominations, several top European coaches are also in the running for FIFA's coach of the year award.

Jose Mourinho (Chelsea), Louis Van Gaal (Manchester United) and Manuel Pelligrini (Manchester City) make up the top three Premier League managers in the nomination list.

 

Other strong favourites include Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid), La Liga winner Diego Simeone (Atletico Madrid), Pep Guardiola (Bayern Munich) and Antonio Conte (Juventus)

Joachim Low (Germany), Alejandro Sabella (Argentina) and Jurgen Klinsmann (USA) finish off the list, as managers who have achieved glory with their respective national teams.
