As he settled into a well-cushioned chair of a city hotel, Baichung Bhutia quite candidly admitted he hasn’t managed to watch more than one half of the I-League so far this season.

“I couldn’t even watch the Kolkata derby last night. Could they restore the power before the match ended?” he asked, referring to the power failure during the Mohun Bagan-East Bengal match at the Salt Lake Stadium on Sunday night.

“I have been busy sorting out the formalities for my football schools. It’s a very important project for me. It’s my way of giving back to the sport that has given me everything,” he explained.

On Monday, he announced the Mumbai launch of the Baichung Bhutia Football School (BBFS) - the second centre in the country to have the facility after New Delhi. The school will be established across four centres in the city - Priyadarshini Park (PDP), Bandra, Juhu and Kandivli. An inter-school tournament will be held at PDP from December 2 to 4 and 20 shortlisted children will be admitted to the school. The first batch is likely start from December 5.

“It will be open to any kid who is willing to play football...it’s more like a pay and play thing. Around 20 to 30 per cent of the admissions will be reserved for the underprivileged kids, who will be taken in free of cost,” he said.

Bhutia has entered into an agreement with former Real Madrid and Portugal coach Carlos Queiroz (who was also Manchester United assistant coach) to provide technical expertise.
