Lucknow’s Awadhe Warriors took an unassailable 3-0 lead against Pune Pistons to clinch their semifinal spot in the Indian Badminton League in Hyderabad on Monday.
K Srikanth (men’s singles), PV Sindhu (women’s singles) and Mathias Boe-Markis Kido (men’s doubles) won their respective matches in straight games to take Awadhe Warriors to 16 points (before the start of the second men’s singles game between RMV Gurusaidutt and Tien Minh Nguyen) Warriors, who were on 12 points at the start of their tie against Pistons, got four points including a bonus point for winning the tie.
PV Sindhu defeated world No. 3 Juliane Schenk 21-20 21-20 to give Awadhe Warriors a 2-0 lead in their last league tie against Pune Pistons at the Gachibowli stadium in Hyderabad on Monday.
Sindhu was elated after her first win over the German Schenk. Sindhu said: “I’ve played against Schenk twice but this was the first time I won. I’m really happy.”
Earlier, local shuttler K Srikanth defeated Sourabh Verma 21-18 21-16 as Awadhe Warriors started on a victorious note.
