Commonwealth Games gold medallist Apurvi Chandela secured herself a ticket to the Rio de Janeiro Olympics by shooting her way to a bronze medal in the 10 metres air rifle event at the World Cup in Changwon (South Korea) on Saturday.

Chandela became the second Indian to qualify for next year's mega event after pistol shooter Jitu Rai. She shot a total of 185.6 in the finals, to finish behind Pejcic Snjezana of Croatia (gold) and Serbia's Ivana Maksimovic (silver). Pejcic eventually finished with a score of 209.1 to Ivana's 207.7. Three Olympic quotas were up for grabs in the event. A country can win a maximum of 30 quotas from a total of 15 shooting disciplines (including shotgun events), two each from each discipline.

"I had been aiming for a World Cup medal for a long time. I am really happy now. My joy was doubled when I realised that I won an Olympic quota for my country," an elated Chandela said. "This medal-winning performance has made me confident. I will work hard and do my best to secure more podium finishes this year."

National Rifle Association of India president Raninder Singh praised Chandela for her never-say-die spirit. "We are delighted that she has won India's second Olympic quota place. Today, I reflect on the day before the 2014 Commonwealth Games finals in Glasgow where she tore her ligament and was in acute pain. However, she finished with a near-perfect score. This is clear evidence of her mental and physical strength which is starting to bear fruit now," he said.
