Anurag Thakur, 41, is all set to become the youngest president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at its special general meeting (SGM) in Mumbai on Sunday.

The BCCI received only Thakur’s name for the vacant post after he was nominated by all six full member units of the East Zone: Cricket Association of Bengal, National Cricket Club, Odisha Cricket Association, Tripura Cricket Association, Assam Cricket Association and Jharkhand Cricket Association (JCA).

President of Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association (HPCA) since 2000, Thakur became the BCCI secretary in the last elections after a compromise was reached between camps of Sharad Pawar and Arun Jaitley in order to sideline Tamil Nadu strongman N Srinivasan.

Thakur will be officially declared as the president for the term 2014-17 on Sunday at the SGM. However, Thakur hardly has time to bring in any major changes in the working of the Board.

Interestingly, Thakur has been nominated by all six full member units of the East Zone including Srinivasan loyalists like JCA. Thakur, a BJP Member of Parliament from Hamirpur in Himachal Pradesh, will replace Shashank Manohar who took over as International Cricket Council’s (ICC) first independent chairman on May 12.

Thakur’s rein at the top may not be to his liking as the Supreme Court has pushed the Board into a tight corner over the Justice RM Lodha panel’s recommendations. Thakur knows well that he, like all present serving BCCI officials, won't be eligible to contest if the panel's age and tenure recommendations are implemented. However, the current crop of BCCI administrators are hoping that a miracle can save them from here.

Though Thakur will go into the books as a first-class cricketer turning BCCI president after Raj Singh Dungarpur and RP Mehra, the manner in which he had played his only Ranji Trophy match after taking over as HPCA president had only brought into fore the dictatorship of ruling officials while selecting teams at the domestic level.

Ajay Shirke of Maharashtra Cricket Association is tipped to become the new secretary. Part of the Pawar group, Shirke’s decision has surprised many inside his camp because it was well known that Manohar and Thakur hardly saw eye to eye on many issues. This was the reason that Manohar did not even take Thakur into confidence while deciding to switch to the world body.
