In one of the narrow lanes of Dadar where the Chavans live, an otherwise quiet area has been busy ever since their local boy and promising cricketer Ankeet Chavan was caught by Delhi police for spot-fixing in IPL on May 16.

Thursday was no different. Media thronged in numbers to get that elusive byte from the beleaguered cricketer, who got bail on Tuesday alongwith the other accused.

Ankeet, who had got an interim bail for his wedding from May 31 to June 6, hadn’t spoken ever since his arrest. While Sreesanth has given enough meat for the media to feast on in Delhi as well as Kochi, his hometown after he was released.

The left-arm spinner finally spoke. But not much. He came out of his modified garage-type house, flanked by relatives and said a few well-rehearsed lines.

He refused to take questions from the media. He spoke hurriedly but with a dead-pan expression and in three languages (English, Hindi and Marathi) almost as if he wanted to get rid of the journalists who kept on pouring requests, to both Ankeet and people close to him, for more quotes.

One of Chavan’s relatives had apparently been told by Ankeet about the ordeal he has been through recently.

“Ankeet wants to be with his family as much as possible. He has been through some really tough time, spent sleepless nights in police custody and now wants to relax,” said the relative.

“He has just got married and wants to be with his wife who has stood alongside him in these trying times,” he added.

Coming to Ankeet’s short presser, he played it safe. If anybody expected a juicy disclosure, there were going to be none.  “I am happy to be back home. I am thankful to the judiciary for giving me the bail. I also thank my lawyer for helping me get bail. My family and friends because they stood by me ,” he said.

Ankeet, of course, said he dreams of returning to the cricket field. “I’ve always given my 100 per cent and have always played the game with a lot of passion. I hope that I get positive verdict from the judiciary so that I get to play cricket again,” he said, almost in one breath and went back into his house.
