Britain number one Andy Murray recorded a straight sets win over Milos Raonic in his Group B match on Monday to keep his ATP World Tour Finals hopes alive and deny Roger Federer a chance of securing the semifinal spot in the tournament.

Federer had ousted Japan's Kei Nishikori with a straight sets win earlier on Tuesday and needed Murray to lose or prevail in three sets against Canadian Raonic. However, the Briton beat Raonic 6-3, 7-5 to save himself from elimination and will now face the 17-time Grand Slam champion on Thursday, with a semifinal spot up for grabs.

Murray said that on Sunday there wasn't much magic, and added that on Tuesday he came up with some good shots in the right moments. He said that Raonic didn't serve as well as he can and that helped, reported BBC.

The signs had not been particularly good for Murray heading into Tuesday's do-or-die contest after a poor opening display against Nishikori and with only one win in four matches against Raonic.

There was plenty on the line for the Canadian too, however, and it was Murray who coped better with the occasion. That he was able to clinch victory in two sets could prove decisive when the final standings are calculated.

Murray now moves on to face Federer on Thursday evening with a chance to extend his season into the weekend, the report added.
