Once bitten, twice shy doesn’t apply to the bookies who were hoping to strike gold through Rajasthan Royals player Ajit Chandila.

Ashwin Agarwal alias Tinku Mandi alias Tinku Delhi, a bookie arrested by the Delhi police, has told the Mumbai police that Chandila had not just forgotten on May 5 to signal the bookies that he was going to throw away an over in the IPL-6 match with Pune Warriors. He had done the same less than a month before — on April 17 during a match with Mumbai Indians.

Agarwal claimed that he had struck a deal with Chandila and his teammate, Ankeet Chavan, five days before the start of IPL-6 through middleman Sunil Bhatia for Rs20 lakh each.

But Chandila forgot to give the signal that was decided on for throwing away an over, making Agarwal reportedly suffer a loss of Rs50 lakh.

Police sources said Agarwal maintained a book on bets he placed, the least being Rs50 lakh, under the nom de guerre of Arjun. “He claimed that gave Rs20lakh to Chandila and Chavan outside Ashoka Hotel in Delhi on March 28. The deal was done through Bhatia,” revealed a source.

During the April 17 match between Mumbai Indians and Royals at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Rajasthan, Chandila was supposed to signal the bookies by pulling out his chain, kissing it and looking up before bowling a delivery. “Bhatia told Agarwal that Chandila had given the signal.

Agarwal then went ahead and placed bets of Rs50 lakh with bookies Jupiter and Lambu. Agarwal lost all of his money. Royals won that match,” a police officer said.

Chandila was forced to return the money both times.

Since the fateful day, Agarwal was looking to get even with Bhatia. He found his window of opportunity in jail. “When the two were remanded in Tihar jail, Agarwal bashed Bhatia up,” said a source.

Bookie Ashwin Agarwal placed bets of Rs50 lakh after being told by another bookmaker, Sunil Bhatia, that Ajit Chandila was going to throw away a particular over. The Royals player had, however, given no signal, making Agarwal suffer a huge loss.
