Vilasrao Deshmukh has created quite a stir in the Indian cricket set-up by filing his nomination for the vice-president’s post of the Mumbai Cricket Association. The reaction among the mandarins in the BCCI has been guarded, not many willing to come on record on the Pawar-Deshmukh alliance in cricket politics. But Deshmukh tells DNA that he is not dependent on Pawar for victory. Excerpts:

Why this sudden decision to take the plunge into cricket administration?
It was not a sudden decision. I have been contemplating about it for some time. Last year too I gave it a thought. I was the chief minister and felt I would not have enough time for it. Now I think I can spare the time for MCA. Besides, my friends and supporters have been persuading me to contest the elections.

But why did you choose cricket? Why not any other sport?
Because I have been associated with the game for some time. When I was the chief minister, I have helped the MCA many times in many issues. I have had a long association with the game for a while.

Have you set any goals for yourself in cricket administration - like MCA, BCCI and ICC presidentship...?
No. I have not thought that far. It is just a decision to help grow the game in Mumbai. My target is to make Mumbai’s infrastructure the best for the 2011 World Cup. I want to work towards that.

You have taken the help of Sharad Pawar. That has come as a surprise to many.
I have not. I’m an independent candidate in the elections. I have my supporters. But I won’t mind Pawar’s support for my candidature. If he supports me, I welcome it.
But you were made part of his panel...

See, elections are fought in groups. That is the reason for being in his panel. There is no other reason.

Finally, have you done your homework about Mumbai cricket? Do you know what was Mumbai’s performance last year in Ranji Trophy?
Yes I know.
