PM Eldo has been associated with football for three decades, as a player and administrator. He worked in Banaskantha before shifting base to Ahmedabad. In the recent elections of the Ahmedabad District Football Association (ADFA), he was re-elected as president. In an exclusive interview with Nikhilesh Pathak, Eldo talks about his plan, his detractors, et al.

Why is Ahmedabad not able to raise its standard of football?
I believe that if we select 22 players in each level, from the under-14 to the seniors, and train them for a month, Ahmedabad will definitely have a good team. But there has been no recruitment on sports quota in government offices for around 15 years. People want the guarantee of a job, which football does not give. Parents are aware of this situation and so are unable to encourage their children to take up football as a career.

Do you have any plans of popularising the game in Ahmedabad?
There are plans of a one-day tournament, with each half being of 20 minutes. The teams will have 11 players each. I hope this kicks off by August.

What do you feel about six- and seven-a-side tournaments, which have been receiving good response?
It is good to popularise this format of the game, similar to the T20 format in cricket. Personally, I do not believe in supporting such tournaments as they are money-making affairs. Most importantly, the national body (All India Football Federation) does not recognise them. Being a member of the parent body, I cannot get involved in this.

There have been allegations that you do not attend local matches to encourage young players...
Why should I attend all matches? A top administrator attending them is not conducive. Instead, a daily meeting between coaches and players is very essential. If they meet regularly, the players and ultimately the team will benefit.

Is it not strange that we have officials of national and international standard, but no player?
I agree, but they are unwilling to officiate in local tournaments. If they do, then I feel the standard here will increase.

What do you have to say about your ADFA colleagues?
Not everyone is committed. There are a few who have asked for certain posts and we have given them these, but they are not willing to take on responsibilities. They tend to run away from them.
