FIFA World Cup 2014 Player Profile: Luis Antonio Valencia

Wednesday, 25 June 2014 - 10:31pm IST | Place: Mumbai | Agency: AFP

Ecuador and Manchester United winger Antonio Valencia is not only fast and powerful, but plays with his head up seeking out strikers as he bursts down the right flank. He can set the tempo of a game and provides the final ball, although his goal tally could be better. He plays right back too when needed. Born in a remote Amazonian town he left against his father's wishes to join army team Deportivo El Nacional in Quito, where he matured in a four year spell. A quiet year in Spain led to a breakthrough in the Premier League at Wigan in 2006, where he excelled for three seasons before United offered him the unenviable task of stepping into the departed Cristiano Ronaldo's boots in 2009. At 28, he goes to his second World Cup fit and on form.
