Argentinian striker Lionel Messi, including his game on Wednesday, June 25 against Nigeria, has scored 24 goals in his last 23 international appearances

* The shirt number to have contributed the most goals at the 2014 World Cup so far is No.10 (20 goals), followed by No.9 (15 goals) & No.13 (11 goals).

* England have been eliminated at the opening group stage of a World Cup for the first time since 1958.

*Wayne Rooney has scored his first World Cup goal for England ending a run of 759 minutes. 

* Wayne Rooney is yet to score a World Cup goal. This will be his 10th game, if he plays.

* In 1990, Chile were suspended for two years and banned from World Cup qualifiers in 1989 for some bizarre antics by their goalkeeper Roberto Rojas. In the same year, during a match against Brazil,  he pretended to be hit and injured by a firecracker. Chile, who were losing 1-0 when the incident happened, had to win by two clear goals to qualitfy. The players decided to leave the pitch for "security reasons". TV replays clearly showed that Rojas had not been hit and he later admitted that he had made self-inflicted injuries with a razor hidden in his sock. In April, 2001, Fifa who had originally banned the player for life, granted  him amnesty.

* For the 1990 World Cup, hosts Italy were forced to renovate five stadiums and construct two new ones in Turin and Bari for the tournament.

* Total number of goals scored in all the 19 World Cup editions is 2,208. The most number of goals were scored in the 1998 FIFA World Cup, with 171 goals. Croatia's Davor Ĺ uker was the top goal scorer in 1998. The fewest goals ever scored in a FIFA World Cup is 70 goals, in the 1930 and the 1934 editions.

* Brazil will be hosting the FIFA World Cup for the second time in their history. This time, 12 number of cities that will play host to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

* Bosnia and Herzegovina are the two teams who will make their first ever appearance in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The Bosnia and Herzegovina national football team have never appeared in the finals of the FIFA World Cup as an independent nation. Bosnian-Herzegovinian players were part of the Yugoslavia national football team until 1992. The breakup of Yugoslavia resulted in the formation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, which is considered distinct entity from the Yugoslavia team, which appeared eight times at the FIFA World Cup between 1930 and 1990.
