IPL 8 CSK v/s MI: Hardik Pandya, Ambati Rayudu ensure Mumbai victory

MI almost threw away a splendid start with 3 quick wickets and some slow batting, but CSK's dropped catches and an awful 19th over from Negi ensured Mumbai's victory.

IPL 8 CSK v/s MI: Hardik Pandya, Ambati Rayudu ensure Mumbai victory

Mumbai had it won when they were 50/0 after 5 overs and then 84/0 after 10. They almost threw it away with 3 quick wickets and some slow batting, but CSK's dropped catches and an awful 19th over from Negi ensured Mumbai's victory. The last few overs were an exhibition of good batting combined with ridiculous bowling and fielding. MI win by 6 wickets.

Over 20

FOUR. The ball is full on off and Rayudu goes for a needless across the line swipe. The ball takes the edge and flies over short third man for four. Mumbai have won by 6 wickets! What a farcical end!

DROPPED. Jadeja has dropped the easiest catch ever. Pandya swings hard, the ball takes the top edge and flies to mid wicket. Just beyond. Two fielders converge on it, and then Jadeja drops the worst sitter ever!

Over 19

SIX. Rayudu smashes the ball straight down the ground and just beyond the rope, to bring up 25 runs off the over. MI 154/4. Just 5 needed.

Yorker, inside edge behind the keeper for one, as Negi appeals.

SIX! This over is turning out to be the nightmare Chennai did not want. Full toss on middle and leg is swung mightily over wide long on for six.

SIX! Length outside off, Pandya swings over extra cover, beats wide long off whose jump went wrong.

Goes for a reverse sweep now, and misses. 24 off 10 needed.

SIX! Pandya gives himself room and crashes Negi over long on for six. Sweet timing.

Over 18

Down the track again, Rayudu plays the slower ball to third man. MI 129/4 off 18 overs.

Good ball, Rayudu advanced down the track but faced a yorker just outside off. He misses and has to walk back to the crease.

Hardik Pandya is the new batsman.

OUT! Rohit tries to go down the ground over long on, miscues and is caught at long on. Waste of the reprieve two overs ago.

Bravo.........

Over 17

SIX! Crashed down the ground by Rayudu, hard, flat and fast. Hits a man just beyond the straight fence! He goes down and his comrade rushes to him. MI 125/3 after 17.

Yorker on middle, well dug out by Rohit for a single.

DROPPED. It's McCullum, but at least the catch was a difficult one. Rayudu tried to thrash a low full toss over extra cover, where McCullum did not time his jump perfectly. Two runs.

SIX! Full on off stump, Rayudu gets down on his knee to smash Nehra down the ground for a classy six.

Ashish Nehra comes back.

Over 16

MI are 108/3 after 16 overs.

DROPPED. Faf du Plessis has dropped Rohit Sharma. It's a sitter. Rohit went for the big shot down the ground, got a top edge and was spooned at long on.

Slower ball, Rayudu slogs it over midwicket for one.

Full and fast on off stump. Rohit smashes it to deep cover for one.

Short outside off and Rayudu slogs it over wide mid off, but finds wide long off as the ball loses momentum on the bounce.

Rohit gets a single to square leg.

Dwayne Bravo is the new bowler.

Over 14

Good over, just 3 off it. MI 94/3 after 14 overs.

Dot balls rise, Mumbai's required run rate climbs as well.

Leading edge for Rohit as the ball stops on him, he manages to drop his hands to make sure the ball falls short of cover.

Two runs off the first two balls.

Over 13

Five off the over, MI 91/3 after 13 overs.

Rayudu comes down the track and drives over cover, but only a single.

Ambati Rayudu drives down the ground for a single.

Over 12

OUT! Chennai are convinced Pollard is run out. A direct hit from the deep finds Pollard short of his ground on the second run. Just short. MI 86/3 after 12.

Pollard advances down the track to Negi but can only play it back to the bowler.

Over 11

Great over, 1 run and two wickets. MI 85/2 after 11 overs.

Surprise. Kieron Pollard comes in. It's as if Mumbai have short circuited their batting line up.

OUT! Another one holes out at dee midwicket, and it's Lendl Simmons now. Hoicked across the line, safely into the hands of the fielder. MI are suddenly two down.

Rohit Sharma walks in at No 3, as the crowd wakes from his slumber.

OUT! Parthiv plays another slog sweep, and this time finds the fielder right on the deep midwicket fence. It was a very well judged catch as the fielder was inches away from the boundary. Parthiv 45 off 32. MI 84/1.

Ashwin...

Over 10

Single off the last ball, MI 84/0 after 10 overs.

FOUR. Parthiv slog sweeps to deep square leg for four.

Simmons gives room and swings hard over mid on. The timing is poor, and that is just as well because it falls short of long off.

Again a backfoot shot to a not-so-short ball, this time to deep midwicket for one.

Parthiv rocks back and drives wide of long off for two. The throw is quick but Simmons just makes it at the non-striker's.

Jadeja...

Over 9

MI just prefered to go slow that over. 75/0 after 9.

Parthiv is trying some strange shots. This time he tries a sweep-scoop against Ashwin, but is beaten. He was lucky not to be bowled.

Over 8

Oh. Parthiv goes for the sweep, the ball turns in and rips, misses the stumps. MI 73/0 after 8 overs.

Great shot, Parthiv gives room even as he goes on the backfoot, and cuts the ball to third man. Short third runs hard to stop it.

Parthiv goes back to drive, plays a bit early but short cover cannot catch it. Two to sweeper cover.

Pawan Negi is the fresh bowler.

Over 7

FOUR. Cut away through backward point for four. MI 67/0 after 7 overs.

And again. This time the ball is quicker and flatter, and rushes onto Simmons. Hits his pad and then bat. Jadeja goes up but no one else does. It looked adjacent!

Lendl is struck on the pads and Jadeja tries an appeal, but the ball was clearly going down leg.

Simple single to long on for Parthiv.

Simmons rocks back and gets a single to the off side.

Ravindra Jadeja comes on to bowl.

Over 5

Quick single off the last ball, MI 50/0 after 5 overs.

FOUR. Another boundary. On the legs from Nehra and Simmons flicks it fine for four.

FOUR. Nehra reaches 23 in 8 balls....off the ball. The ball is gentle paced and slightly outside off. Simmons plays a late cut and finds the gap between point and short third man.

SIX! Slugged, slogged, biffed, swatted down the ground for six by Simmons. Poor Nehra.

Over 4

FOUR. Parthiv is playing a gem. The ball is full on off as MM Sharma comes around the wicket. Parthiv takes one step down and then lofts the ball spectacularly over mid on for four. MI 35/0 after 4 overs.

Wristy flick to deep midwicket for two this time.

FOUR. Picture perfect cover drive, between cover and mid off. High elbow, great balance and good timing.

Another good dive at short third sees another boundary prevented. Jadeja was also going to his wrong side - right.

MM Sharma.

Over 3

Good last ball, late movement away from Simmons, who gets an edge to third man for one. 13 off the over though,  MI 23/0 after 3 overs.

DROPPED. Negi drops Parthiv. Short again from Nehra but straighter line, and slow. Parthiv is early into the shot and hits the ball to short midwicket, whose dive is not good enough for a catch.

FOUR. Short and wide and Patel picks it over the cover point fielder for four. Nehra can be really ordinary as well, if anyone forgot that. He spent a lot of his international career being that.

FOUR. Bad ball now, short and sits up for Patel to pull for four through midwicket.

Parthiv misses with the drive as Nehra bowls on a straight seam and moves the ball away quickly. Is this the 6/23 guy or the other one tonight?

Hot-and-cold Ashish Nehra is introduced.

Over 2

Cut hard, but Simmons finds point this time. 10/0 after 2 overs.

Parthiv drives to mid off, who is a little deeper. MI run a quick single.

Good save. Simmons using the pace to late cut, tries to beat third man McCullum who dives hard to stop. Just one.

Slashed to deep point, where a fielder cuts it off to concede just one.

FOUR. Now he moves back, and Patel drives beautifully through the covers for four.

Mohit Sharma is the new bowler, and Dhoni decides to preserve the tactic of coming up to the stumps.

Over 1

End of the over, MI 3/0 after 1 over.

Nice, classical backfoot leave by Lendl Simmons, as if it's the first morning of a test match.

Wide ball, just outside leg to Simmons.

Short and turning away, but Parthiv Patel fails to beat cover. Opportunity missed.

Single off the second ball.

R Ashwin returns, and opens the bowling.

CSK have reached a very defendable 158 after 20 overs. Pawan Negi's wild hitting provided the late boost that CSK required, after McCullum's early assault was wasted by the likes of Dwayne Smith. Dhoni continues to struggle with the bat despite making 39. But CSK will think they have got a decent score, with their capable bowling attack.

Over 20

Swing and a miss from Dhoni off the last ball. They run anyway and Parthiv hits the stumps to run Negi out for 36 off 17. CSK 158/5 after 20 overs.

DROPPED. Short ball, gets high on Negi who tries a weird pull shot over mid off. It takes a leading edge that flies to short third man, who incredibly drops it!

DROPPED. Negi slogs de Lange high and mighty into the on side, but the distance is not good. Right on the boundary rope, he is dropped, but the fielder somehow collects the ball on the bounce.

FOUR. Slower good length ball, but slightly strays down leg. Dhoni goes back and flicks it past fine leg for four. 150 up.

First ball is slogged to long on for one.

Marchant de Lange to bowl the last over.

Over 19

Slogged to long off for one, a mere 14 runs off this over. CSK 147/4 after 19 overs.

Missed chance to hammer Kumar some more. Full on off, and Dhoni swings with all his might, but gets an inside edge onto the pad for one.

FOUR. Short and wide outside off. Ball sits up nicely for Negi, who slashes it over covers for four.

Slogged to long off for one.

SIX. Nice length and line from Vinay Kumar at gentle speed. Dhoni pulls the ball over deep midwicket for six.

Over 18

Another cute shot, Dhoni jumps across to the off side and tries to play the ball past fine leg. But he cannot beat that man, who throws the ball to the non striker's end. Dhoni would have been out on a direct hit. CSK 133/4.

Fast and length outside off, Dhoni tries a cute late cut that doesn't come off.

Very short, head high as Negi ducks and then slaps the ball down to deep midwicket for two.

SIX! Full on leg stump and a scared-looking Negi lofts McClenaghan cleanly over long on for six. Only that the stands there are empty due to a court order, so no one is cheering Negi.

McClenaghan into his last over now.

Over 17

FOUR. Gets better, full on off and slogged hard past cover. Really hit hard. CSK 122/4 after 17 overs.

FOUR. Best shot of the over. Negi gives room and swings a length ball on middle stump over cover for four.

Slower full ball, Negi swings and misses, tries a ridiculous run and is sent back.

FOUR. Several hundreds would have been scored by these huge bats by now. Another short ball, this time Negi tries to slash it over cover. The ball is too close to the body for that shot, but he ends up getting an edge over backward point for four.

Swing and a miss. Short, slightly slow and Negi has a wild pull at it. Ball and bat both meet air.

Slower ball from de Lange enables Dhoni to get just one.

Faf du Plessis holed out to diving Lendl Simmons at backward short leg in the last over, to my favourite bowler McClenaghan. Non-entity Pawan Negi is the new batsman.

Over 15

Toosed up outside off stump, a single to cover. CSK 103/3 after 15.

Now Faf du Plessis gives room and tries to whack the ball down the ground. The ball stops on him and he can only play it back to Suchith.

Slogged into the off side, straightish. Dhoni was looking for far better timing and a much better result than a single.

Dhoni goes over midwicket this time. But the timing is not good so its just two.

Dhoni tries a cute paddle sweep to Suchith, ends up playing the ball into his own pads.

Over 14

Single off the last ball means Bhajji has given away 36 off 4 overs for one wicket. CSK 98/3 after 14 overs.

FOUR. Turned away into the leg side for four. Good over for CSK.

SIX. Faf slams the ball over cow corner for six. It was not so short.

Faf biffs the ball to sweeper cover and the fielder dives, as the camera cuts to a Jonty interview.

Harbhajan into his last over.

Over 13

Faf runs the ball down to third man, and another strategic timeout arrives. CSK 84/3 after 13 overs.

Now CSK focus on merely dabbing Pandya around for singles. Not sure of this strategy. Isn't he a nobody?

Short, fast and wide, but Dhoni's cut is not well placed. It finds a third man rushing across from the fence. Just one.

But he bowls a slower ball, which Dhoni almost hits straight to short mid wicket. Haha.

Hardik Pandya is the new bowler. Did anyone hear of him before this IPL?

Over 12

Very quick single after a dab to short cover. Parthiv flicks off the bails off the throw but Faf is really quick. CSK 80/3 after 12 overs.

SIX! This was bound to happen at some point. Dhoni rushes down the track like it is 2005, and hits the now-full ball over long on for six. Did it crash into the skull of a CSK fan in the front row? Let's hope not.

Harbhajan continues with his length balls turning sharply into the CSK batsmen.

Over 11

Great over, with two more dot balls to end. 70/2 after 11 overs.

The Vodafone fan army is now plugged, with cameras focussing on them. The commentators don't miss the plug, as Dhoni advances down the track but can't get the ball away.

Another single, as the CSK fan-heavy crowd chants Dhoni. Probably after some prompting from the open mike.

J Suchith is milked into the off side for a single.

Over 10

Just two off the over, CSK 67/3.

Faf du Plessis turns away an off spinner to short fine leg for one.

MS Dhoni walks in at a relatively high No 5. Plays the first ball to sweeper cover for one.

OUT. Another charge down the track, and another batsman holes out at deep midwicket, to a slog sweep this time. This time it is the struggling Smith. 27 off 34.

Harbhajan.

Over 9

The strategic timeout has been called with CSK on 64/2 after 8.4 overs.

OUT! IPL's highest scorer is gone. Down the track again and Raina makes it a full ball again. However, this time he prefers to go over midwicket. The cross batted shot finds the hands of a racing deep midwicket.

FOUR. Raina shot from Raina. Down the track, presents the full face of the bat while taking the ball on the full. Slams it straight down the ground.

J Suchith to bowl the last over before the timeout as Dwayne Smith continues to struggle.

Over 8

10 off the over, CSK 59/1 after 8.

Slower ball, Smith swivel pulls too early. He gets a top edge but there is no short fine leg so they get two.

FOUR. Reverse sweep, not well timed at all. The ball hits the glove and goes for four to the third man fence. Are the gloves too huge now?

Dwayne Smith, suddenly, is on 17 off 26.

Raina is down the track, but is beaten in the flight and plays a dangerous drive through covers for one.

Bhajji comes into the attack. India discard, IPL hero.

Over 7

Quick single off an inside edge, and CSK are 49/1 after 7 overs.

Driven to long on for one, Smith gets off strike after a long while.

Smith ducks into a ball just outside off, but it's actually not short enough. Looked a bit silly.

Wide outside off and late cut on the run to third man for one. Everything from MI tonight has been on a length or shorter.

Slower ball but short on middle, Raina pulls it to deep square leg. The long leg fielder runs in and puts in a good dive to restrict the CSK to 2 runs. If not for the lack of pace on the ball that was four.

Vinay Kumar comes back for another potential hammering.

Over 6

Maiden over for de Lange, CSK 44/1 after 6 overs.

Five dot balls in the over so far.

Big swing and a miss by Smith outside off.

Marchant de Lange comes back, bowling a slower delivery that Smith defends to the off side.

Over 5

Suresh Raina almost gets run out first ball as he races down the track after a dab to mid on. Sent back just in time. CSK 44/1 after 5 overs.

OUT! Short and sits up, but McCullum's swing finds the safe hands of deep midwicket this time. 23 off 11. CSK 44/1.

FOUR. Inside edge and four. McCullum swings at a straighter ball and his bat turns to the on side, the ball flies to deep square leg for four.

FOUR. This time the cut is almost along the ground, the ball races to the fence defying the flying point fielder.

FOUR. Shorter and wider and McCullum creames the ball over point for four. No edges there.

He bowls with the keeper up and a short run up. The ball has little pace on it, but McCullum tries to loft it over deep point. The ball takes the top edge and falls in no man's land wide of deep point. Two runs.

Vinay Kumar has been introduced for McClenaghan.

Over 4

Defensive shot by McCullum finds the inside edge as Parthiv screams. The ball merely trickles into the on side for a single. CSK 30/0 after 4 overs.

FOUR. Slightly fuller but same line, and Smith pulls behind square for four.

DROPPED. Half tracker to McCullum, spins to outside leg. He pulls to square leg, where Harbhajan drops a sitter.

J Suchith is the new bowler.

Over 3

Short again, but this time a better line, Smith pulls but his bat meets air. CSK 23/0 after 3 overs.

FOUR. This is turning into a huge over. Now Smith flashes outside off, too much width and the ball flies to the fine third man fence.

FOUR. Beautiful drive from Smith, the ball was wide and length but it was his conviction not to overhit it that mattered.

Short and rising into BB's chest, he plays an upper cut to the third man region. There is a desperate cry of "CATCH" but the ball falls well short of third man.

SIX. Here comes McCullum down the track, and as his fellow New Zealander drops it short, McCullum swings it straight down the ground for six.

Over 2

Five off the over, all off that wide. CSK 8/0 after 2 overs.

Another defence to cover and Smith is now on 3 off 10 balls.

Length just outside off, slight shape away. Smith is late on the defence but his huge bat means it goes to the off side for no run.

FOUR WIDES. Short, Smith ducks and the short Parthiv cannot stop the ball with his jump. Wide and four.

Short on the hips, Smith pulls without conviction and the ball goes out to the keeper Parthiv. Not called a wide because it brushed his body.

Merchant de Lange to share the new ball.

Over 1

BANG. Length just outside off, McCullum swings to the on side. Gets an underage which McClenaghan does well to stop in his follow through. CSK 3/0 after 1 over.

McCullum......

Now Smith finds the gap with the cut, third man comes around to restrict Smith to a single.

Slightly wider this time, Smith cuts, but finds point with precision.

On off stump and neatly defended to the off side by Smith.

Short ball from around the wicket, bouncer, Smith ducks.

Two runs. beautiful drive from Smith off McClenaghan to start off proceedings. I love this guy's bowling action.

Countdown....9, 8, 7...Let's Go!

Here come the MI players. And now the CSK batsmen. Smith, and...Brendon McCullum.

Chennai Super Kings have won the toss and chosen to bat first.

19:05 IST Friday, 8 May 2015

Welcome to the LIVE coverage of the match between Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, to be played at Chennai. The match begins at 8 pm IST.

Chennai Super Kings are in a familiar position at the top of the table, while Mumbai have been thrown back into the bottom half after briefly flirting with the top 4.

More importantly though, there will be no Lasith Malinga for Mumbai, as political calculations override sporting ones.

A win would virtually guarantee Chennai a place in the playoffs, while a loss for Mumbai would mean they have to win their remaining 3 games. Thus, the picture is set up perfectly. Here's the match preview.
