India v/s England ODI, Tri-series, Brisbane: England annihilate India, win with bonus point

India failed with both batting and bowling, handing England an easy win. Finn and Anderson ripped the Indian batting apart with bounce and swing before Ian Bell, Moeen Ali and James Taylor batted India out of the game. Nothing for India to take away from this game.

Over 28

England have won. They stroll a couple to finish the game in 27.3 overs and win with a bonus point. Really commanding performance by the English team, and India are almost out of the final now.

Over 27

England are doing it in singles. 3 needed off 139 balls. Can he finish it with a boundary here? No, its a dot ball. 151/1 after 27 overs.

Shami is bowling and gets milked through the covers for one. Now he gets pulled and they still only get one.

Over 26

England prolong to agony for one more over. 147/1 after 26 overs.

England are almost there in 25 overs. Eight more needed, now seven with that wide.

Over 25

Last ball is short and cut away. Only the long boundaries in Australia save it from being a boundary. Diving stop, 3 runs. 13 needed off 156 balls.

Suresh Raina has been given the ball. Shows that India have given up. Even that is a farcical statement, so complete has England's domination been today.

Over 23

England are still content not to go for the really big shots. Just keeping the scoreboard ticking. It would be nice for everyone if they finish off this match.

Bouncer, which gets called a no ball for height. 25 needed off 166 balls.

Mohammad Shami returns. England now need under one run per over to win. Ya, read that again.

Over 21

Last ball is pulled and falls just short of short mid wicket, who dived. England 121/1.

Driven through the covers, easy runs. Two more, and already seven off the over. Just 35 needed.

Umesh Yadav bowls outside leg and Taylor sweeps him for two. Didn't get it in the middle of the bat, Hot Spot shows.

England scored 10 off the last over from Axar Patel. Just 43 more needed for victory and 30 overs remain.

Over 19

Last ball is quick and very short, almost sails over Taylor's head. He looks at the umpire but no wide called. England 101/1 after 19 overs.

Four. Taylor plays a beautiful off drive and bisects mid off and extra cover. Umesh Yadav is bleeding runs again. 30 off 4.2 overs.

England need just 59 more runs to win from 32.1 overs. 22.1 overs to achieve a bonus point.

Over 17

Bell drives down the ground again, gets three as the fielder has to give hot chase. Will keep strike. England 93/1.

Smashed down the ground for two, and Bell gets to his fifty off exactly fifty balls. This has been a commanding knock.

Short ball from Yadav, gets slashed over midwicket for three.

Over 15

Bell has made 45 from 43 balls. Now he attempts a pull and misses, practices the shot again. England 81/1 after 15 overs.

Umesh Yadav comes back and England go on the attack again.

Over 14

That's a good over from Axar Patel. There was an appeal for LBW on the last ball which was brushed away by the umpire. England 78/1.

Over 12

England are now 70/1 after 12 overs.

And I said it. Axar Patel is on. Two runs off four balls off this over so far.

Over 11

After 11 overs England are 68/1.

Binny continues from the other end. I don't understand the reason for this extended spell. Why not try Axar?

Over 10

Two boundaries of the last over off Mohammad Shami. England now 66/1 after 10 overs.

Over 8

Good stop by Ajinkya Rahane in the covers. England 54/1 after 8 overs.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar to continue. Gets swat-pulled away by Taylor and England come back for two.

Over 7

Seven off the other. England 48/1 after 7 overs.

Driven through the covers for four. Bell goes back on the attack after a few defensive shots. Stuart Binny is the bowler.

13:08 IST Tuesday, 20 January 2015

We are almost ready for the post-lunch session. England need 113 to win from 44 overs. Not much of a target unless India can produce a miracle.

Over 6

Bell's got off to a flyer. 28 off 18. England 41/1 after 6 overs and it's lunch.

Cool shot. Strays on the pads, ten years ago that would have been described as a great shot. Bell picks it up from leg and scoops it over deep square leg for four.

Umesh Yadav continues for what could be the last over before lunch.

Over 5

Just one of the over. One more for lunch? 31/1.

James Taylor comes in to bat with Ian Bell. Stuart Binny continues. This time, England are content to defend. Playing for lunch, in an ODI game. Interesting times.

Over 3

OUT! Stuart Binny strikes with lunch near. Moeen Ali with a big swing of the bat down the ground, doesn't connect well and is caught by Virat Kohli. 25/1 after 3 overs.

Driven through point for three. This is a very different game when England are batting.

Over 2

12 off the over. England 17/0.

Two boundaries off the second over. The second was better. Bhuvneshwar Kumar was only marginally short and was pulled to the midwicket fence by Moeen Ali like the latter's name was Ricky Ponting.

Over 1

No ball. Free hit. Carved over cover by Moeen Ali. They get two. England 5/0 after 1 over.

England have already come out to bat, because its a long way from lunch time. And surprise, Stuart Binny will bowl.

153 is not the score Dhoni had in mind when he chose to bat this morning. India have been completely undone by the bounce of Finn and Anderson. This should be an easy chase for England.

Over 40

OUT! Anderson gets four. Shami tries a premeditated shot, tries to clear the on side boundary, but again a fielder running backwards takes a brilliant catch near the boundary. India have folded for just 153 in 39.3 overs.

OUT! Binny goes now, he had no real choice but to attack. Down the track, tries to clear the off side boundary, gets it high on the bat and is caught at long on. Good catch running backwards. Binny made 44, the highest score of the Indian innings.

Over 39

And 1 leg bye conceded now. Shami swung again and it looked like he had a top edge and caught by the keeper, there was another appeal but no reaction from the umpire. India 153/8 after 39.

Wide. There was an appeal for a catch as Shami went after a short ball outside leg and missed. But the umpire called it wide and crushed everyone's hopes.

Binny takes a single to third man off the third ball and now Shami has to negotiate 3 balls. He manages a late cut for one off the fifth ball.

SIX. Perhaps this is best way now. Finn bowls good length and Binny swings him for six. Perhaps they cannot last 12 overs and Binny realises this.

Over 38

Binny is stranded on the non-striker's end for a while now as his teammates get dismissed around him. Shami attempts an upper cut and misses. India 143/8 after 38 overs.

Bowled! Perfect leg cutter from Anderson, late swing and Kumar is done. India sink further. 143/8.

Over 37

Binny defends the last ball. India 141/7 after 37 overs.

Ball left alone. Finn was on a hattrick. 5/20. Surely that is not how difficult this pitch. Remember Starc got 6/53 the other day against India.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar has come out to join Stuart Binny. Forget big hitting. It may be survival time for India.

OUT! Axar Patel is gone and Finn has five. Bowled first ball. Beautiful inswinger. India 137/7 and they may not survive 50 overs now.

OUT! There will be no Dhoni special today. Short ball from Finn, Dhoni gets an edge, and the keeper takes it. India 137/6 and back to survival mode. Finn's fourth dismissal today.

Over 36

No run off five balls, and Dhoni got dropped off the first ball. A single off the last ball, the only run from the over. India 137/5.

Over 35

Good over from Finn, just one off it. India don't dare to attack him just yet. 136/5 after 35 overs.

Steven Finn is the next best thing to Anderson. He's taken three wickets and he's back. We're in a powerplay as well now, the batting powerplay. India's hand has been forced, England's not.

Binny is now the highest scorer in India's innings, and he's done it at a fair clip.

Over 34

Six! Perhaps Binny will take up that challenge! Down the track and clears long off, ten rows back into the stands. 135/5 after 34 overs.

Moeen Ali now into his ninth over. Can India give him something to remember them by or will he finish with a really good spell?

Over 33

India are substituting good running for some missed big shots and a certain reluctance for an all out attack. 126/5 after 33 overs.

Now Binny is the victim of another appeal. Charges down the pitch to Woakes, misses, but not given out caught behind. Which is just as well, because Hot Spot showed nothing.

Over 32

Ohhh....Dhoni misses an intended cut shot and there is a loud appeal for caught behind, not given. India 120/5 off 32 overs.

India are looking to be slightly more aggressive against Ali now.

Over 30

Moeen Ali has bowled 7 overs for 17 now. Hard to see this happening to India. The team that was till not long ago really good players of spin. India 113/5 after 30 overs.

Over 29

And again! This time its a top edge, Woakes bowled it really short and Binny went for the hook. Edge flew to fine leg for four. India 110/5 after 29 overs.

Edged! And four. Binny tried to go aggressive again and nearly paid the price, but there was no slip and the ball ran too fine.

Down the track, and Binny has thumped that for four. A lot of risk but executed well.

Over 28

Single to end the over. India 96/5 off 28 overs.

Now Dhoni's getting a little impatient though. Three dot balls and Dhoni shimmied down the track, then had to play it out.

Over 27

Dhoni and Binny continue to play with caution as just three runs are scored off Broad. The commentators seem to be very praiseworthy of Binny. India 94/5

Over 25

Another good drive by Binny gets him two. India 89/2 after 25 overs.

Oh. Short ball, Broad saw Binny advancing, wrong footed. Binny had to duck into the ball while on the front foot.

Strong backfoot cover drive from Binny fetches him two.

Now Dhoni goes for an expansive drive off Stuart Broad and misses. To be fair, India's batting has bottomed out here.

Over 24

India 84/5 after 24 overs.

All India have to do right now is bat sensibly. There are no demons in the wicket. Dhoni chooses to follow Binny's example in defending.

Over 23

Just one off the over. India 81/5 after 23.

Stuart Broad comes back into the attack. Binny chooses to keep defending. 5 off 14 balls so far.

Over 22

Moeen Ali continues and is driven down the ground by Binny for one. 80/5 after 22 overs.

Over 21

Four. Maybe he's not so bad. Nice drive on the up after a positive stride forward. India 76/5 after 21 overs.

Meanwhile, Twitter is already up in arms.

India in desperate need of a partnership, but the batsman walking in is a bowling all-rounder called Stuart Binny.

Over 19

OUT! It just gets worse and worse for India, it's Rayudu now. He was always struggling, but Finn has removed him with an outside edge. 23 off 53 and India now 67/5 in 19 overs.

Over 18

MS Dhoni walks in, far earlier than he would have liked to. India 66/4 after 18 overs.

OUT. Comes down the track, then tries to defend, is beaten, is way out of the crease and is easily stumped. India 65/4.

Mooen Ali comes on to bowl, and Raina is gone!

Over 17

Suresh Raina is the new batsman. India 65/3 after 17.

OUT! Kohli is gone, he really shouldn't be batting at No 4! Beaten for bounce, tried to cut and got an edge behind. Out for just 4 and now India are in serious trouble.

Over 16

Kohli gets off the mark first ball. 64/2 after 16 overs.

Rayudu continues to charge down the track despite the dismissal, and get just a single. Now he's down on the ground and drinks are coming out.

Over 15

Virat Kohli is in, one position too late again. Rayudu keeps strike with a single. India 58/2 after 15 overs.

OUT! Rahane is out, extra bounce does the trick again. Down the track, got big on Rahane and the bat may have turned in his hand. Mid on runs back and takes the catch. Rahane made 33 off 40 balls. Wasted start.

Finn continues. Short ball dug in to Rayudu who backs away and plays it for one. His strike rate is still under 50. 20 off 42 balls.

Over 13

Why did I say that? He biffs a ball through wide mid off for four. Single off the last ball and it's 53/1 from 13 overs.

Steven Finn replaces Anderson. Rayudu is 12 off 33 balls.

Over 12

Rayudu continues to try hitting the ball hard. Now he slogs a slowish delivery from Broad for two to deep midwicket. 45/1 from 12.

Over 11

Rayudu trying to scamper singles now as England continue with Anderson. He lets a few go now and its 40/1 after 11 overs.

Some fair queries being raised:

Over 10

Last ball of the 10th over defended carefully. India 36/1 after 10 overs.

Short ball, and Rahane pulls with gumption. Over the midwicket boundary for six. Now an edge flies for four and India are well on their way. At least, Rahane is.

Over 8

Now an inside edge flies to fine leg and Broad is distraught. Off the 5th ball, Rahane moves forward prematurely, and not adequately. Drives and gets a looping edge, but past mid on for two. India finish on 24/1 after 8 overs.

Broad replaces Woakes, and Rahane takes him on immediately, lifting him over mid off. The timing was not great so they get just 2.

Over 7

Short ball, poor over from Anderson, and Rayudu finds his release with a superb pick-up pull to the boundary. 18/1 after 7 overs.

Five off the over so far as Rahane finds a few gaps. But Rayudu's desperation is increasing.

Shimmy down the track and Rahane inside-edges to his pads and then the slips. Desperation.

Over 6

Last ball of the over coming up - and its no run. 9/1 from 6 overs. Real build up of pressure on India.

Rahane drives on the up, gets a thick outside edge for one. Then Rayudu plays a loose shot, bottom hand comes off, but no run.

Over 5

Rayudu goes for a wild slash off the last ball, got high on him but he did not connect. 1 off 11 balls. India 8/1 off 5 overs.

Anderson continues to bowl in the channel on and outside off and the Indian batsmen can do nothing but defend or leave.

India have moved on to 7/1 after a few decent shots from Rahane. Brisbane is a quick wicket and Anderson is still on song.

Over 3

Rayudu has come in at No 3. A lot of people were hoping it would be Virat Kohli. India still 1/1 after 3 overs.

OUT! Dhawan fails again with the bat, went for a drive, got an outside edge and the keeper caught it. 1/1.

Over 2

India open their account off the 10th ball of the innings and the crowd cheer. 1/0 after 2 overs.

Chris Woakes will take the new ball along with Anderson. Dhawan defends.

Over 1

And the over ends in a maiden. 0/0.

Anderson is getting his line and length very right. No runs off the first four balls. Now some swing makes it five dot balls.

James Anderson opens the bowling. Rahane defends.

Ajinkya Rahane has come in to open instead of Rohit Sharma. Ambati Rayudu has been slotted at No 4.

8:52 IST Tuesday, 20 January 2015

Gavaskar doesn't seem to believe that Rohit is injured. He thinks it more likely that Rohit has been rested.

8:31 IST Tuesday, 20 January 2015

India have won the toss and chosen to bat against England.

Rohit Sharma is out with a sore hamstring, Ambati Rayudu comes in in his place.

For Australia, Chris Jordan misses out, James Anderson is back in the side. Not good news for India overall.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jolted by the opening loss to Australia, India would look to plug the bowling loopholes and ensure a stronger batting display when they take on England in their second ODI tri-series cricket match on Tuesday.

In Brisbane, both sides will be looking to register their first win in this tournament with the hosts having stolen a march on them with two successive wins. Australia beat England by three wickets in Sydney on Friday and then beat India by four wickets in Melbourne on Sunday.

They took a bonus point from the first game as well and sit pretty on nine points from two games. In this series, billed as the dress rehearsal for the upcoming ODI World Cup, these two sides will be keen to get a win under their belt.

India can take some solace from their match against Australia in the sense that they pushed the hosts a lot closer. By their own admission, the Australian batsmen were going for that bonus point against England and thus lost quick wickets in the middle order. The repeated mini-collapse against the Indian bowling was no such fluke.

Two bowlers played a key role in squeezing the run-rate, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Axar Patel. It was quite a positive for the Indian team, reeling under the inconsistency shown by their attack in the preceding Test series.

They missed the medium-pacer in the first three Tests and when he returned in Sydney, he was way off-colour, down on pace and lacking in match fitness. A five-day rest since and lot more bowling in the nets has done him good. Yesterday's performance should be another boost for him to return to form for the Men in Blue need him to work his magic with the new ball in the next two months.

In only his first international outing in Australia, the young left-arm spinner Axar impressed with his control as skipper MS Dhoni even opted to hold back a few of his overs and bring Patel back later during the end overs of the chase.
