Cricket World Cup 2015 Quarterfinal Sri Lanka v/s South Africa: Proteas break knockout jinx with thumping victory

South Africa have won with ridiculous ease. Sri Lanka had the advantage of winning the toss and batting first on a good Sydney wicket, but they batted with too much on their minds. The SA spinners took 7 wickets, and then the Proteas made sure the chase of 134 was superbly controlled. South Africa have broken the jinx of losing knockout games at the World Cup. Sri Lanka go home despondent, after a really bad game. Have a thought for Sangakkara and Jayawardene, this is not the way they would have wanted to go out.

Imran Tahir is the Man of the Match for his 4/26.

Over 18

FOUR! And that is the end of the match, the end of Sri Lanka in this World Cup, and the end of South Africa's jinx in knockout games!

Yorker length, de Kock digs it out to mid on for no run.

Four more needed, another short ball and de Kock goes hard at it but misses.

Short ball, de Kock swings and misses, wide called. That was harsh.

Full toss outside off, driven away to deep square leg for two, fielder from third man covers a long distance to cut it off.

Slower ball but short outside off, driven through the covers for two. More eased than driven. 9 to win.

Malinga is back.

Over 17

Drives, edges, hits the batsman's back leg, and SL yelp collectively, South Africa 123/1 after 17 overs.

Hits the pad, loops up, short leg catches it and SL make a huge appeal. Umpire thinks its not out.

Leg byes for two down to fine leg. 123 in 100 balls. SA need just 11 more.

Oh. Turns, rips away from de Kock, takes the edge of the bat and goes down the field for three.

Over 15

SA are 110/1 after 15 overs.

FOUR. Dropped. That would have been an astounding catch. De Kock slammed that ball over the on side, it nearly went all the way to the midwicket fence, the fielder ran in, leaped hard but couldn't hold on.

FOUR. Short, sits up for de Kock to hit and he crashes it through midwicket for four.

Thisara Perera has been given the ball. Might as well concede the match instead.

Over 14

They get it with a single. SA are 100/1 after 14 overs. Just 34 needed.

'Milk face' de Kock continues to milk the SL bowling. 1 away from the South African 100. In the 14th over. In half the time that Sri Lanka got there, with 3 less wickets down.

Over 13

Fifty for Quentin de Kock! First of the tournament, and what a time to do it! SA 96/1 after 13 overs.

WIDE. The ball angles into de Kock. So much that it's wide down leg.

Pulled hard into the on side, to deep square leg for one. de Kock moves to 49.

FOUR BYES. What the hell is happening? Short ball, de Kock goes for the pull, misses. The ball hits the TOP of his helmet and flies away behind the keeper for four.

FOUR WIDES. De Kock backed away, and Chameera sent it even wider. It was so wide the keeper had no chance whatsoever. Even 4 keepers wouldn't have.

Over 11

Last ball goes for a single and SA are 77/1 after 11 overs.

Short, above head height, and SL go up as the keeper catches it. Umpire calls it a wide. It was nowhere near the bat.

Flicked away off the hips, SA reach 75. Just 58 more.

Wide. Short and wide, but outside leg and de Kock lets it go.

FREE HIT. Great ball! Just outside off, perfect fast yorker, lands on the white line and there's nothing de Kock could have done.

FOUR. OFF A NO BALL. Pulled away for four. Horror for Sri Lanka.

FOUR. Beautiful cover drive from Quentin de Kock, leant into it, perfect classical drive. SA get ever closer.

Over 10

FOUR. Creamed through the off side off the last ball, and SA move to 61/1.

Oh. Turn and bounce, Faf nearly played it into the hands of short leg.

Over 8

Good testing over from Kushal, SA 45/1

Turns away from de Kock, who defends reasonably well.

Kaushal continues and off the second ball, Faf opens his account. This ball is certainly taking turn on this pitch.

Over 7

Short ball, ducks, end of the over. 44/1.

FOUR. Quentin drives it beautifully for four to begin proceedings.

Two balls left in the over.

We are back after the lunch break. Malinga bowls, to de Kock this time.

13:25 IST Wednesday, 18 March 2015

Here's some respite for SA fans:

---------------

Over 7

And it's lunch. Will SA choke?

OUT! The first South African wicket falls! Short and wide, Amla slashes hard and the ball flies to third man who takes a good catch.

Over 6

OH. First sharp hint of turn, rips away from de Kock who almost edged it. SA 37/0.

de Kock gets two to the on side, quite tamely.

Now whipped through the leg side and SA get three. There was a fumble on the boundary else it would be 2.

Kaushal comes on to bowl. He is mostly bowling doosras. 3 dot balls.

Over 5

Now a slower ball, de Kock thought about it, then let it go. SA 32/0 after 5 overs.

Yorker, yorker, yorker. De Kock digs it out to mid on.

FREE HIT. Superb ball, yorker just outside off and de Kock can do nothing.

MISFIELD. You can't do that while defending 133. Another yorker, de Kock digs it out to squarish mid wicket, who misfields badly and SA get two. What's more it's a NO BALL!

FOUR. Horrible ball. Way outside off, almost a throw, full toss, and de Kock just guides it through the gap between point and cover again.

De Kock digs out another Malinga yorker. He's actually protected Amla, if that's possible.

Over 4

FOUR. Flick through midwicket and another boundary. SA 24/0 after 4 overs.

FOUR. Even shorter and wider, de Kock slashes, past a diving point for four.

FOUR,. Nice length outside off. De Kock just puts it in the gap between cover and point. There is no one back and it's four. Easiest boundary ever.

Hurried bowling change from SL, Kulasekara comes on. What was the point of the Dilshan over then?

Over 3

Amla flicks into the leg side for one, SA 11/0 after 3 overs.

Malinga almost yorks de Kock, who manages to dig it out to deep square leg, not entirely intentional.

Slashed away to third man for one.

Short ball, Amla pulls hard into the on side for two. Didn't try to keep it down.

Over 2

de Kock has scored 54 runs in the World Cup at an average of 9. SA 6/0 after 2 overs.

Single off the first ball. Oh, Dilshan is the new ball bowler. Can SL pull out a trick here?

Over 1

Swing and a miss outside off stump. SA 4/0 after 1 over.

Four dot balls follow the first. Will SA choke?

FOUR. Hashim Amla crashes Malinga through the covers off the first ball.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over 38

It's all over in Sydney. What a meek capitulation by Sri Lankan batting order. The tradition of choking continued in a South Africa match, just that it is their opponent in the receiving end this time.

Over 37

Oh WAIT. It's raining. Surely rain cannot deny SA today?

OUT! Sangakkara is gone, last hope gone for SL. He slashed hard and found third man. he's gone for 45 off 96 balls. SL 127/9.

Over 36

Attacks again, gets a single down to deep cover and Sanga keeps strike.

FOUR. Slogged from off stump. Into the gap through midwicket for four.

Down the track, lofts it over cover and gets two. Not well time, but hell, who cares.

FOUR. Short and wide, and Sangakkara now has opened up. There's a huge task on his hands.

Slapped to wide third man, but Sanga declines the single.

Sangakkara is left standing as Abbott comes back. Swing and a miss outside off. Can Sangakkara eke something out? 170?

Over 35

Double wicket maiden for Duminy. SL 116/8 after 35 overs.

OUT! Collapse, and with spin! Plumb LBW, and there's a procession here. Kaushal is the new victim, and Duminy has a HATTRICK!

OUT! Kulasekara is gone, faint edge to the keeper. The umpire won't give him out, so Kulasekara just walks! It's almost as if he had no interest in being out there. But there was certainly an edge as Kulasekara hung his bat out stupidly.

Over 34

SL 116/6 after 34 overs.

OUT! Now Perera's gone. Ball turns outside off and Perera under-edges it, it hits the stumps! SL 115/6 and Tahir has gone wild!

Floated up, Perera plays in the air and it falls short of short cover.

Thisara Perera was the new man in and he is almost the next man out as he fumbles during the run and nearly gets run out.

Over 33

OUT! Mathews is gone! The pressure gets to him, he charges down the track, the ball is outside off and Mathews slams it straight to short midwicket. Mathews 19 off 31, SL 114/5 after 33 overs.

Over 32

Sangakkara still can't find the gaps. Single off the last ball, SL 109/4.

Single off the FIFTH ball. SL really need to accelerate.

Swinging in from Steyn and hits Mathews on the back pad, Steyn goes up in appeal but the others don't follow.

Over 31

There's a hint of frustration though behind that cool demeanour. Sanga is finding the fielders with precision. 3 dot balls. Sanga 30 off 81. SL 107/4.

Sangakkara is still content to play a moderate game. To be fair, SL have lost wickets every time they looked to be settling in.

JP Duminy is back to bowl. 6 overs for 22.

Over 30

Steyn searches for a yorker, almost gets it. SL are 105/4 after 30 overs.

Short ball, pulled but no power from Angelo. Just a single to deep midwicket.

Another ball right on off stump, Sanga dabs and runs a quick single. SA still can't hit the stumps.

Dale Steyn comes back, and is right on line first ball. Sangakkara is 27 off 74 balls.

Over 29

Morkel is really troubling Mathews, who seems intent on staying back. SL 102/4 after 29 overs.

Oh god! Another slower ball, short, Mathews fends it uncomfortably towards short mid wicket, Roussew is a little sqaure. He jumps and dives but its slightly wide of him.

Oh dear. Short ball, Angelo took his eyes off and got hit it the arm. In fact, he's been hurt on the finger and takes his glove off. Calls the physio. 5 people come out.

Morkel continues, Sanga drives and Sri Lanka bring up their 100 in the 29th over. Sangakkara brings up his 26 off 72 balls.

Over 27

Shortish ball, moving across Sangakkara, who sways away rather extravagantly. SL 93/4 after 27 overs.

Short ball tucked into the hips, Angelo dabs behind and runs a quick two.

Good length ball on middle and leg, and Morkel gets away with it as Angelo can't get it past square leg.

Morne Morkel comes back into the attack, good move.

Over 26

Comes down the track off the last ball and gets one. SL 89/4.

Sangakkara still knocking the ball around.

Tahir has dismissed Jayawardene 4 times in ODIs, conceding just 12 runs in 35 balls.

SL are not really picking Imran Tahir.

Over 25

4 singles off the over, SL 87/4 after 25 overs.

Driven down the ground for one.

Sangakkara can't afford to get out now.

Over 24

Angelo Mathews is the new batsman and he survives a few close moments, gets two off the last ball. SL 83/4.

OUT! Jayawardene has scooped Tahir straight to short mid on! He went back, the ball was quick and Jaya was late. SL in big strife now at 81/4.

Over 22

HUGE APPEAL, Tahir has gone nuts, Jayawardene missed the ball and it flipped into his front pad. South Africa have asked for a review. Everything was fine except the impact was just outside off. SL 77/3 after 22 overs.

Spin, ripping turn outside off and Jayawardene misses.

Tahir continues. Sangakkara is getting more comfortable and you have to blame South Africa for allowing it.

Over 21

Single to end the over, SL 76/3 after 21 overs.

Two wides off the over already. No slip. SA's strategy is being questioned by the commentary team, and rightly so.

Over 20

Spins outside off, and Jayawardene is cautious to not have gone after it. Single off the last ball and SL are 72/3.

Jayawardene comes in. Are we seeing Sanga and Jayawardene batting together for the last time?

OUT! Thirimanne is gone just as SL were settling down! Slower ball, Thirimanne plays early, gets a leading edge and is caught and bowled by Tahir. SL 69/3, Thirimanne made 41 off 48.

Over 19

Five off the over, SL 69/2 after 19.

On the legs and another single.

Sanga is playing marginally better now, and marginally quicker. Poorly executed sweep, but gets two as it goes fine.

Over 18

Edged, no slip, and SL get two. SL 64/2 after 18 overs.

Wide. Well down leg side, turns in, Thirimanne tries to sweep but misses.

Sanga milks Tahir for a single off the second ball.

Over 16

FOUR. That was a slog of a man who had 6 off 42 balls. Walks across off, and slog sweeps it over square leg. Didn't time it well and it went for four. SL 55/2.

Oh man! Beaten outside off, Sanga wasn't playing for the turn, the ball swiped in.

One run off 4 balls so far.

Imran Tahir comes into the attack, spin from both ends now.

Over 15

Sri Lanka 50/2 after 15 overs and it's time for drinks.

Low full toss and finally Sanga gets another single, this time to long on.

JP Duminy comes into the attack, he serves up driving length and Thirimanne gets one to sweeper cover.

Over 14

He plays out another over. Asks for another bat! Sangakkara 5 off 38 balls, SL 47/2.

Sangakkara is getting slightly more agitated now, driving more often. 5 off 36.

After Thirimanne takes a single, 'Kara slaps a cut straight to point.

Kyle Abbott continues into his 5th over.

Over 13

Another good over to Sangakkara. SL 46/2 after 13 overs.

FOUR Byes. Ball seams, swings and bounces, Sangakkara thinks about it then leaves, it flies way over the keeper's head for four.

Morkel continues, his ball is way outside off, it just pitches on the line and not given wide.

Over 11

Oh. Morkel brings the ball sharply back into the hips, Sangakkara jumps, gets a pad-bat edge which falls short of short point. SL 38/2 after 11 overs.

Sangakkara lets another ball go.

Thirimanne takes another quick single and AB still can't hit the stumps at the bowler's end.

Wild wide from Morkel, Kock goes to the wrong side and therefore his dive can't stop the ball. Two runs.

Morkel continues to Sangakkara, who's made 2 off 24 balls.

Over 10

Sangakkara pulls hard and down to fine leg for one. SL 35/2 after 10 overs.

FOUR. Bashed over wide mid off, was not fully in control but enough to get it to the boundary.

Pitched on leg, and Thirimanne drives through mid wicket for two. Sangakkara is on 1 off 22 balls. Thirimanne on 20 off 17.

Over 9

Quick single to end the over, SL 27/2 after 9 overs.

FOUR. Much more confident this time, between cover and point, the cover fielder flies to his right to no avail.

FOUR. Oh. Thirimanne on the drive, goes just past a flying point and into the boundary.

Great bouncer to follow, fast and rising, Thirimanne though expertly sways out of the way.

Short ball, rising and pacy, Thirimanne goes after it, but its gone before he can get his bat around it.

Thirimanne gets an inside edge, ball ricochets into his hip, and he cowers.

Over 8

Drives down the ground, no run, and its another maiden. SL 18/2 after 8 overs.

Sangakkara is still playing a lot of dot balls. Yet to score this over, 5 balls gone.

Dale Steyn has come back from the other end.

Over 7

Slower ball, short, and Thirimanne can do nothing with it. SL 18/2 after 7 overs.

No ball, and the umpire signals a free hit.

Bowled on the legs and Sangakkara gets off the mark.

Sangakkara leaves and its 13 balls for 0. Now make that 14.

Morne Morkel has been brought into the attack as Steyn is rested. Worrying times for SA.

Two boundaries off the last over.

Over 5

Steyn is having some problems with his neck. SL are 6/2 after 5 overs.

Sangakkara has now played 10 balls without scoring.

Thirimanne plays it down to third man for one, and the crowd cheers hard.

OUT! Steyn has bowled a ripper, no way Dilshan should have played that. It's just outside off, and a bit short, and swinging away. Dilshan drives, finds the edge, and 2nd slip takes a good low catch. Out for 0, SL in trouble! 4/2.

Over 4

Beautiful ball, beautiful over. 4/1 after 4 overs.

Rapped on the pads, and SA go up in appeal. That swung back into 'Kara. No referral, height was the issue. The next ball is just outside off, and Sangakkara's defensive prod finds air.

The old ball has been replaced because its skin began to come off. Abbott followed up by bowling a wide off the new ball.

Oh...Sangakkara first decides to play, then leaves as the ball shapes away.

Over 3

Maiden over, SL 3/1 after 3 overs.

Fuller on middle, slightly uncomfortable drive, straight to mid on. SL are trying to hit the ball too hard I think.

Swing and a miss. Slightly short, Dilshan had a full blooded slash at it and missed.

Dilshan is facing up to Steyn now. He miscues the second ball, tries to flick to the on side and edges it to mid off.

Over 2

The man, Kumar Sangakkara comes in to big applause. He defends the first two balls. SL are 3/1 after 2 overs.

OUT! Perera is gone, he finally gets an edge, but what a catch! de Kock goes flying to his right, it was low and very difficult and nearly popped out, but he managed to hold on. SL 3/1.

Another swing and a miss. Perera is all nerves.

Kyle Abbott is the other opening bowler. Perera goes for a quick single but is sent back.

Over 1

Another edge, and another single down to third man. SL 3/0 after 1 over.

Drives, and misses. Good comeback ball from Steyn.

Edged as T Kushal goes hard at it, and flies over slip for two.

Welcome to the LIVE coverage of the World Cup Quarterfinal between Sri Lanka and South Africa at Sydney. The match begins at 9 am IST.

This is the first quarterfinal, as we get down to the business end of the tournament. This time, there is no second chance. The winner reaches the semifinals, and the loser flies back home. While SL will undoubtedly hope that Sangakkara gets another ton while Dilshan or Jayawardene click, SA will rely on AB de Villiers, Hashim Amla and (out of form) Dale Steyn. Here's the match preview.

It is yet another knockout game for South Africa. Knockouts for SA have meant despair, six out of six times in World Cups. Can the great AB de Villiers finally turn the tide for the Proteas?

Well, AB de Villiers thinks he can. Here are his thoughts on the match. And here's the podcast version of it.

Coach Russell Domingo also has high expectations from the Proteas.

Sri Lankan great Muthiah Muralitharan has already warned the islanders that they must not focus solely on AB de Villiers. Meanwhile, SL know they will have the majority support at the SCG and are banking on it.

Here's our analysis of what South Africa can do to avoid choking against Sri Lanka.

South Africa's infamous tie against Sri Lanka in 2003 keeps being brought up, and so does their near-choke against Lasith Malinga in 2007.

There is some history and then there is some interesting trivia about South Africa and Sri Lanka at World Cups.

Here are some head-to-head and team statistics for South Africa and Sri Lanka
