India innnngs start
After Michael Clarke's side declared at 290/5, India have been set a target of 364 on Day 5. India will look to settle for a draw as a deteriorating wicket stares them in the face.
Welcome to the coverage of Day 5 of the 1st India-Australia series. Australia are in a dominating position going into Day 5, with a lead of 363 and five wickets standing. The last day will begin at 5 am IST.
They will however be looking to declare soon, to have a crack at India in the hope of winning the Test match. 80 overs is probably a reasonable time that India would have to last if they wish to draw this Test.
India did not perform particularly well on Day 4, arguably losing all three sessions. In the first session India were bowled out for 444, adding just 75 runs to their Day 3 score of 369/5. Australia put up very strong partnerships up front and it was only towards the later part of the day that India managed a few wickets. The day was also marred by verbal spats between Shikhar Dhawan, Varun Aaron and David Warner. A disciplinary hearing might be in the offing. Here's our piece on how the events unfolded in a rather unfortunate fashion for Varun Aaron. Oh, and Warner made 102 to add to his century in the first innings.
No Indian bowler has performed particularly well either. All that however, ceases to matter on Day 5 - which must belong to India's batsmen. Shikhar Dhawan must learn, and quickly, to move past cute 20s and 30s. Rohit Sharma was struggling to understand line and length in the first innings, and Pujara looked uncertain though he scored 73. The onus of drawing the match on the last day has to be shared equally for India to feel comfortable. Murali Vijay did in fact own up to a 'lapse of concentration' on Friday. And Ajinkya Rahane made the right noises when he said that patience would be key on Day 5.
As for Australia, it's been a surprise that Nathan Lyon has been the pick of their bowlers. One would expect Mitchell Johnson or Peter Siddle to be India's chief destroyer. It's bamboozling that India of late haven't been playing spin well abroad. First Moeen Ali, now Nathan Lyon. On Day 5, India will have to contend with a resurgent Nathan Lyon on a deteriorating wicket.
Nathan Lyon took 5 Indian wickets in the first innings. He was the chief destroyer for Australia even on Day 4. Click here for complete match updates from Day 4.
